This model positions itself as a reliable entry-level solution within the Lowrance lineup, offering basic safety functions without the complexity of more advanced systems such as VHF radios with integrated AIS transponders (e.g., Lowrance Link-9 or Simrad RS40). It serves as a direct alternative to comparable Class D DSC VHF models, such as the Garmin VHF 115i or the Raymarine Ray53, distinguished by its Lowrance user interface and built-in GPS.

The LINK-6S operates on transmission frequencies from 156.025 to 157.425 MHz and reception frequencies from 156.050 to 163.275 MHz, covering all international, American, and Canadian channels. It offers selectable transmission power of 25 W or 1 W, suitable for long-distance or close-range communications. Its dual integrated receiver continuously monitors DSC channel 70, ensuring distress call reception without interrupting voice communications. The radio includes a GPS with a frequency of 1575.42 MHz and horizontal accuracy of less than 10 m, enabling automatic position transmission in DSC distress calls.
