Detailed description
Detailed description
The safeSEA S200 AIS SART search and rescue transponder from Ocean Signal represents a critical technological advancement for safety at sea. Unlike traditional radar-based SART units in its class (such as the S100), the S200 leverages VHF frequencies from the AIS system (161.975 and 162.025 MHz) combined with an integrated GNSS receiver. This synergy enables the transmission of positioning coordinates with meter-level accuracy directly to the chartplotters and AIS systems of nearby vessels, significantly reducing response times in distress situations.
Transmission performance and autonomy in extreme conditions
Designed to meet the stringent requirements of SOLAS standards and the European Marine Equipment Directive (MED/4.55), this device delivers a transmission power of 1 Watt (EIRP). Power is supplied by a user-replaceable lithium iron disulfide (LiFeS2) battery module (reference LB3S). This advanced chemistry ensures continuous operational autonomy of over 96 hours, even at -20°C, while maintaining a five-year shelf life. The unit is housed in a compact 227 mm tall cylinder weighing just 315 g with its battery and is certified waterproof to 10 meters immersion.
NFC diagnostics and deployment ergonomics
The major innovation of the safeSEA S200 lies in its integrated NFC connectivity (13.56 MHz). This feature allows direct interrogation of the beacon via a dedicated Android mobile application to check battery status, self-test logs, and GNSS acquisition without consuming the device’s main power. Ergonomically, activation is intuitive even with gloves or cold hands, thanks to protected switch mechanisms. A dual-color LED indicator provides immediate visual feedback on GPS signal acquisition and AIS transmission status.
