The Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT RS 450/100-MC4 solar charge controller is designed for large-scale photovoltaic systems using panels connected in series to charge 48 V batteries. It features ultra-fast MPPT technology to optimize solar energy harvesting under various conditions, making it suitable for both standalone and grid-connected installations.
Technical Capabilities and Connectivity
This model supports a battery voltage of 48 V and a nominal charge current of 100 A, allowing continuous charging power up to 5,760 W at 57.6 V. It handles a maximum DC PV voltage of 450 V and features two independent MPPT trackers, each with a maximum operating PV input current of 16 A and a maximum PV short-circuit current of 20 A. The maximum PV array size per tracker is 7,200 Wp. Maximum efficiency reaches 96%. Unlike BlueSolar models that require an external Bluetooth dongle, the SmartSolar MPPT RS 450/100-MC4 has integrated Bluetooth for configuration and monitoring via the VictronConnect app. It also includes VE.Can bus ports for daisy-chaining up to 25 units and communication with a GX device, as well as a VE.Direct port. An integrated display on the front panel provides essential information.
Safety and Installation Flexibility
The controller ensures galvanically isolated PV connections for enhanced safety. It provides protection against PV reverse polarity, output short circuits, and overheating. An active cooling system with variable-speed fans maintains full nominal power up to an ambient temperature of 40°C. Its protection class is IP21. Battery charge parameters are fully programmable, adapting to various battery chemistries, including lead-acid and lithium, with adjustable absorption, float, and equalization voltages. It includes a programmable relay, auxiliary inputs/outputs, a digital input, and connections for a voltage sensor. Continuous monitoring of PV insulation resistance detects potential faults, reporting errors to a connected GX device if present. Its dimensions are 440 x 313 x 126 mm and it weighs 7.9 kg.
