A 16 m strip-planked motor yacht designed by Patrick Balta

Sanday is a 16-metre motor yacht designed by naval architect Patrick Balta, built using strip-planking technologystrip-planking (yellow cedar strips laminated with fiberglass/epoxy, marine plywood superstructures, balsa sandwich roof). It belongs to the MY 16 trawler lineage that Balta designed for offshore cruising with reduced crew.

Design and hull

Patrick Balta is known for his fast, low-consumption hulls and his work with molded wood. The MY 16 platform has a beam of approximately 4.30 m and a draft of 1.30 m, with a displacement ranging from 12.7 to 16 t depending on fit-out. The reference propulsion for this hull type combines a 180 hp Volvo D4 shaft drive with a backup Volvo D2 sail-drive, achieving a cruising speed of 8 to 9 knots at around 11 l/h.

Program and sailing

The boat is equipped for long-range cruising with a small crew, with a fuel capacity of around 2,400 l and range compatible with Mediterranean crossings to Northern Europe. The CE design category B / 6 persons places it in the medium-distance coastal and offshore cruising segment.
