Sailboat Anemometer Comparator — Skysat

5 wind sensors compared on the criteria that matter in sailing: technology (mechanical vs 2D ultrasonic vs 3D ultrasonic), sampling rate, accuracy, wireless vs wired, autopilot integration. Workshop recommendation by navigation program.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Coastal cruising 30-40 ft sailboat: mechanical B&G 213 (€1,040) or wireless ultrasonic WS320 (€1,499 pack). Accuracy ±1°, sufficient for safe navigation.
  • Offshore cruising + transatlantic: vertical ultrasonic WS710 (€2,043) or WS720 (€2,605). Wired, reliable 10+ years.
  • Offshore racing: high-frequency 3D ultrasonic WS730S Ocean spec (€3,080) or NKE 3D HR II. 10-20 Hz measurements + heel/heading compensation.
  • Workshop verdict: 60% of our installations on 30-50 ft sailboats are wireless WS320 or wired WS710/720.

Skysat workshop verdict — by program

Coastal

Sailboat 30-40 ft — retrofit / refit

The WS320 wireless pack is our default choice for retrofitting 30-40 ft sailboats. 1-2 h installation from the dock, annually replaceable battery, immediate Triton² integration. The ±2° accuracy and 1 Hz frequency are more than sufficient for summer cruising.

Budget pack + installation: ~ $1,700 USD ex-VAT

Offshore

Sailboat 40-50 ft — transatlantic + IRC club

The WS710 or WS720 wired model provides long-term reliability (no battery) + 5-10 Hz frequency useful in rough seas. Our workshop standard for sailboats 40+ feet with mast lowered during refit.

Sensor + installation budget: ~ $2,800–$3,400 USD ex-VAT

Racing

IMOCA / Class40 / serious IRC

The WS730S Ocean spec (€3,080 ex VAT) — 3D ultrasonic, 20 Hz frequency, ±0.3° accuracy — is the international racing standard. For French racing, an equivalent alternative is the NKE 3D HR II (~€2,800 ex VAT, project order).

Sensor-only budget: ~ $3,080 USD ex-VAT (excluding H5000 / NAC-3 and displays)

3 common installation errors observed in the workshop

  1. Sensor misaligned with the boat’s axis.

The 0° orientation of the sensor must exactly match the bow of the boat. A 5° error = permanently offset wind reading, polars no longer matching. Validate with GPS + compass before commissioning.

  2. Sensor mounted too low on the mast.

Wind is turbulent in the top 20% of the mast (interaction with mainsail and topmast fitting). Always mount the anemometer 30-50 cm above the masthead to get clean wind data.

  3. Mast cable run parallel to motor or winch cable.

The sensor cable carries a very sensitive millivolt signal. Next to a cable carrying 80 A at startup = measurable electrical noise. Always separate signal cables from power cables.
