Class 40 #179, designed byÉtienne Bertrand and built byCape Racing Yachts in Cape Town, launched at the end of May 2022 for Laurent Camprubi. South African scow design, one of the first units from the yard to compete on the European circuit.
Keel loss and capsize in Galicia
On August 2, 2022, around 18:30, while on a qualifying delivery for the Route du Rhum, the boatlost its keel 14 nautical miles off the Sisargas Islands in 30-knot winds, capsized within seconds and remained upside down. Camprubi was trappedfor 18 hours in an air pocket under the hull, hypothermia at 34 °C, before being airlifted by Salvamento Marítimo divers on August 3 at 12:30.
Rebuild at V1D2 and new name
Full reconstruction atV1D2 in Caen between August and early November 2022: new Rivoyre Engineering keel, new Axxon mast, standing and running rigging rebuilt, Incidences sails, NKE HR electronics. RenamedGlaces Romane under the colors of Maison Romane 1993 (a Marseille-based ice cream maker), it started the Route du Rhum on November 6, 2022, just three months after the accident.
