Belts: reliable power transmission for alternators

The alternator belt is a critical component of the onboard power generation system. It transfers power from the engine to the alternator, ensuring battery charging and power supply to electrical equipment. At Skysat, with our offshore racing experience, we know that a quality belt means reliability and peace of mind. Explore our rigorous selection here, along with key points to consider for optimal choice.

Choosing the right belt

Selecting a belt suited to your setup is essential to avoid slippage, premature wear, or failure. Several factors must be considered, including alternator type, power to transmit, pulley dimensions, and operating conditions.

  • V-belts: Standard solution suitable for many applications but prone to slippage in high humidity.
  • Poly-V belts: Offer better grip and higher power transmission capacity due to their ribbed profile. Recommended for high-performance alternators.
  • Belt measurement: Essential for a successful replacement. Check the existing reference or measure the length and width of the worn belt.
  • Belt tension: Correct tension is crucial. Too loose, the belt slips; too tight, it prematurely wears alternator and engine bearings.

Materials and durability

The quality of materials used in belt manufacturing directly impacts its durability and resistance to mechanical and thermal stress. Opting for a high-quality belt is a wise investment to avoid failures at sea.

  • EPDM rubber: Provides excellent resistance to heat, UV, and chemicals, extending belt lifespan.
  • Fiber reinforcements: Increase tensile strength and elongation resistance, ensuring stable and reliable power transmission.
  • Regular inspection: Check belt condition (cracks, wear, tension) during every engine service. Preventive replacement is often preferable to failure mid-voyage.
  • Replacement kit: Having a replacement kit onboard, including a spare belt and necessary tools, can save you many headaches.

💡 Skysat tip

When replacing the belt, take the opportunity to inspect alternator and engine pulley alignment. Misalignment can cause premature belt wear and excessive vibration.
