Actisense: choosing the right NMEA interface aboard
A Wi-Fi bridge, a USB interface, and an engine data converter do not serve the same purpose. To select from the Actisense models offered here, start with the protocol of your device, the available physical connection, and the destination of the data.
Which Actisense model for which use?
- NMEA 2000 and wired NMEA 0183 device, with Wi-Fi: the WGX-1-ISO connects the wired device to the NMEA 2000 bus and broadcasts data to Wi-Fi-connected equipment. Its bidirectional conversion depends on the supported messages and configuration.
- NMEA 2000 network to tablet or computer via Wi-Fi: the W2K-1 wirelessly transmits data from the bus and can log navigation data. It can also convert data between NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 for Wi-Fi-connected software, depending on the supported messages, but has no wired NMEA 0183 port.
- NMEA 0183 device to computer via USB: the USG-2 creates a bidirectional, isolated serial link with the PC. It is not a gateway for conversion to NMEA 2000.
- Analog engine sensors and gauges to NMEA 2000: the EMU-1 digitizes compatible analog signals for publication on the NMEA 2000 network. Installation requires configuration tailored to the engine and sensors.
W2K-1 or WGX-1: what’s the difference?
The W2K-1 is suitable if your data already comes from the NMEA 2000 network and you want to use it via Wi-Fi, with logging capability. The WGX-1 adds a wired NMEA 0183 connection: this is the key criterion when an existing device must be physically linked to the NMEA 2000 network.
What to check before ordering
Identify the protocol and connector of each device, the desired data flow direction, the NMEA 0183 sentences or NMEA 2000 PGNs required by the software or display, and the network power supply. For the EMU-1, Actisense requires a PC-to-NMEA 2000 interface such as the NGX-1 or NGT-1 for configuration via Toolkit; it is not included in this selection. Contact Skysat with your device references if you are planning a refit or if message compatibility is not confirmed.
