Detailed description
Detailed description
The Victron Energy Battery Balancer is an essential solution for optimizing the lifespan and performance of battery banks made up of 12V batteries connected in series, typically in 24V or 48V systems. Designed to prevent voltage imbalances that can lead to harmful overcharging or undercharging, this balancer ensures each battery maintains a uniform state of charge. It works by drawing up to 0.7A from the battery with the highest voltage, allowing all units to converge toward an identical state of charge.
Operation and system integration
The Battery Balancer activates automatically when the charging voltage of a 24V system exceeds 27.3V. It continuously monitors voltage deviation between batteries connected in series. A deviation of more than 50mV initiates the balancing process, with a 0.7A current when the deviation exceeds 100mV. For 48V systems, multiple balancers can be paralleled; for example, three units are recommended for a 48V battery bank. This parallel capability sets it apart from simpler balancers, offering flexibility for complex installations.
Advanced safety and monitoring
Equipped with overheat protection and an IP22 rating, the Battery Balancer is designed for reliable installation in marine or automotive environments, though not directly exposed to water spray. It features LED indicators for quick visualization of its operating state: green for activation, orange to signal an active deviation (>0.1V), and red for a critical alarm (>0.2V). A normally open alarm relay (60V / 1A) triggers in case of excessive deviation, enabling integration with a remote monitoring system. This relay can be reset via an external push button. For deeper management, the Battery Balancer is compatible with Victron BMV-702 battery monitors, which allow mid-point monitoring and customizable alarms for proactive prevention of imbalances.
