Legendary French naval architecture firm, pioneers of IMOCA design
Finot-Conq & Associés is a world-renowned French naval architecture firm, founded in 1970 by Jean-Marie Finot (born in 1941) and joined by Pascal Conq in 1988. Based in Vannes since 2005 (on the outer harbor), the firm is one of the world leaders in naval architecture with over 45,000 boats designed (200 different models). Finot-Conq has embodied French naval engineering excellence for over 50 years, with a rigorous methodological approach combining hydrodynamic research, hull validation in towing tanks, numerical simulation (VPP, CFD), and feedback from sailors.
The firm first made its mark in 1970 with the Écume de Mer, a revolutionary sailboat that won the Quarter Ton Cup in 1970-1972 and the inaugural "Boat of the Year" title in 1975. The long-standing collaboration with Bénéteau since 1977 (over 25,000 sailboats sold between 1977 and 2019) demonstrates the firm's ability to design high-performance and commercially successful production sailboats. However, Finot-Conq is best known for its IMOCA saga: present in the Vendée Globe since its first edition in 1989, the firm won four consecutive editions between 1992 and 2004 with its revolutionary 60-foot IMOCAs. The FC56 follows in this lineage, translating the IMOCA DNA (sleek hull, extreme lightness, pure performance) into a 56-foot fast cruiser format.
