Designed for autopilot systems, the B&G RAM-T2-12V hydraulic ram is an integrated linear drive unit. It is suitable for vessels up to 20,000 kg (44,092 lbs) and requires an NAC-3 computer for operation. This ram combines cylinder, pump, motor, clutch, and reservoir in a sealed, pre-filled unit, eliminating the need for external hoses or tanks.
Features and performance
The B&G RAM-T2-12V design allows the use of the autopilot's Power Steer mode in case of manual steering failure, providing a backup function. It delivers a maximum intermittent thrust of 675 kg (1,543 lbs) and a nominal 9-second rudder-to-rudder cycle time. The 12V DC 100W motor has a maximum consumption of 22.5 Amps (for a 25% duty cycle). IP44 protection ensures resistance to water spray, and ignition protection complies with BS EN 28846:1993.
Design and integration
The ram is back-drivable, allowing the cylinder to move freely with the primary steering when the clutch is disengaged. This feature suits vessels with mechanical steering that can be declutched. Internal relief valves protect the unit and its fittings from damage due to rudder shocks or groundings. Its construction includes a BS 1490 aluminum body with SP270 protection, a hard-chrome-plated stainless steel piston rod, and Nitrile & PTFE seals. It operates in a temperature range from -20°C to +65°C. The ram has a 250 mm (9.84") stroke and a tiller arm of 213 mm (8.39"). Its weight is approximately 10.1 kg. It comes with a 1-meter, 2-conductor flying lead for connection.
