Detailed description
The Icom BLU marine IC-M803 is an MF/HF transceiver designed for long-range maritime communications beyond the horizon. Equipped with a Class E SSB radio and built-in Digital Selective Calling (DSC), it ensures reliable and secure connections. The system offers extended frequency coverage from 500 kHz to 29.9999 MHz in receive and 1.6 MHz to 27.5 MHz in transmit, with a maximum RF output power of 150 W PEP (peak envelope power), selectable at 100, 60, or 20 W. It operates on 13.6 V DC ±15% power supply, drawing 30 A at full power during transmission.
Advanced Safety Features and DSC
The IC-M803 features an independent distress button, protected by a spring-loaded cover, enabling rapid transmission of an automated digital distress signal including GPS coordinates. The dedicated DSC watch receiver continuously scans the six distress channels in rotation. It can store up to 100 MMSI numbers (75 individual, 25 group) with a 10-character identification name. The "Multiple Task Mode" allows simultaneous management of multiple DSC call procedures, switching between them without interruption. The digital signal processing system (RF Direct Sampling System) enhances receiver sensitivity and audio clarity compared to conventional systems.
Intuitive Interface and High-Definition Display
The IC-M803 user interface is optimized with a combination of a large main dial and soft keys beneath the screen. An alphanumeric keypad facilitates channel number, MMSI, and ship name input. A programmable key on the supplied HM-214H microphone provides quick access to frequently used functions. The 4.3-inch TFT color display offers a near 180-degree viewing angle, displaying high-resolution characters and icons. The night mode ensures optimal readability in low-light conditions.
Integrated Navigation and Connectivity
A multifunctional GPS receiver is integrated into the IC-M803, supporting GPS, GLONASS, and SBAS systems. Position, heading, speed, and UTC data are received via the supplied GPS antenna (5 m cable) and can be transmitted to other devices via the NMEA 0183 port (version 4.10, 4800–38400 bps). The unit also features a two-minute instant replay memory, automatically recording received audio to ensure no calls are missed. For data communications, the IC-M803 is HF e-mail ready, storing up to 160 frequency, mode, and bandwidth-specific channels, with PC and e-mail modem connection terminals.
Durability and Product Positioning
The IC-M803 remote controller is IPX7 waterproof certified, resistant to immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. The main unit measures 240 × 94 × 238 mm (W × H × D) and weighs 4.41 kg, while the controller measures 274 × 114 × 86 mm and weighs 760 g. The unit operates in a temperature range from –20°C to +55°C.
Designed to complement the ICOM IC-M605 VHF transceiver, the IC-M803 shares a similar user interface and color TFT display, providing a consistent communication experience on the helm. While the IC-M605 handles short-range VHF communications and AIS reception, the IC-M803 extends your communication capabilities well beyond the horizon with its MF/HF frequencies, making it an essential element for offshore navigation and long-distance communications. Among the optional accessories, the AT-140 automatic antenna tuner is available to optimize performance.
