Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for safety and connectivity at sea, the Garmin Cortex M1 transponder is a SmartAIS SOTDMA Class B hub with remote monitoring features. It combines a 10 Hz multi-constellation GNSS receiver (GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo) with a 9-axis heading sensor for precise positioning and threat detection. Unlike passive AIS transponders that only transmit and receive data, the Cortex M1 uses SmartAIS logic to anticipate collision risks, manage anchor watch, and detect man-overboard situations.
Proactive safety with SmartAIS
The Cortex M1 SmartAIS system continuously calculates collision risks by cross-referencing your vessel's GPS data with AIS information received from other boats. It emits directional audio and voice alerts, such as "collision alert, starboard bow," enabling rapid, targeted responses compared to generic alerts from conventional AIS systems. This differs from classic AIS systems that only display targets without predictive trajectory analysis. The "Anchor Watch" function uses the actual anchor position from the bow and data from the built-in heading sensor to track vessel movement, triggering an alarm if the anchor drags or if significant changes in wind speed, direction, or water depth are detected. This anchor watch capability is more advanced than a simple geofence alarm.
Connectivity and extended monitoring
The Garmin Cortex M1 serves as the core of a versatile communication and monitoring system. While the M1 is "VHF-ready," it requires the addition of Cortex H1 (wired) or H1P (portable) handsets, sold separately, to enable full VHF radio functionality and Digital Selective Calling (DSC). It includes a lossless AIS/VHF splitter for sharing a single existing VHF antenna with another VHF radio without signal degradation. Equipped with a cellular modem and Wi-Fi connectivity (2.4 GHz, 802.11b/g/n), it allows onboard monitoring of boat data (position, battery voltage, heading, barometric pressure) via the Cortex Onboard app. Remote monitoring, real-time alerts, and control of onboard devices (air conditioning, lighting) are accessible via the Cortex Monitor app with a premium subscription. It features five inputs for external sensors (digital 0-24V or analog 0-17V) and acts as an NMEA 2000/0183 gateway, ensuring broad compatibility with most chartplotters and multifunction displays. The thermal polymer housing meets IPX7 standards, offering heat, corrosion resistance, and submersibility up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, allowing installation in various marine environments. Its nominal 700 mA consumption at 12V is optimized for continuous monitoring.
