Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for navigation safety and optimization, the Garmin GMR Fantom 18x radome is a compact 18-inch solid-state radar system. It features 50 watts (peak) power and can detect targets up to 48 nautical miles while providing close-range detection from 6 meters. Part of the Fantom lineup, this model introduces notable innovations for boaters and demanding sailors.
Solid-state technology and advanced detection
The GMR Fantom 18x uses solid-state technology, offering rapid antenna rotation up to 60 rpm for dynamic image refresh. Its beam width of 5.2 degrees horizontal by 25 degrees vertical ensures precise coverage. MotionScope™ technology is a key feature, using Doppler effect to identify and color moving targets directly on the chartplotter screen, aiding anticipation of vessel movements or weather fronts. This function is also useful for fishing, helping spot surface bird flocks with Auto Bird Gain.
Operational features and network integration
For increased operational flexibility, the Garmin GMR Fantom 18x radar integrates Dual Range, allowing simultaneous display of short and long-range views with independent settings. Power Save and Timed Transmit modes offer fine-tuned power consumption management, with standby consumption of 4W max and 24W max in energy-saving transmission mode (33W max in normal mode). The True Echo Trails function displays target trajectory history, while Dynamic Auto Gain and Dynamic Sea Filter automatically adjust parameters for optimal performance in various conditions. The system supports radar overlay on charts (Radar Overlay) and automatic MARPA acquisition of up to 30 targets (requires external heading sensor). Integration is via Garmin BlueNet™ and Garmin Marine Network.
Robust design and technical specifications
With a diameter of 50.8 cm, height of 24.8 cm, and weight of 6.35 kg, the GMR Fantom 18x radome is designed to withstand marine environments with IPX7 waterproof rating. It operates on a 10 to 32V DC voltage range. The safe distance from a compass is 97 cm. This model, more compact than its GMR Fantom 24x counterpart, is ideal for medium-sized vessels seeking a high-performance, energy-efficient solid-state radar.
