Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for marine navigation, target detection, and fish finding, the Garmin GMR Fantom™ 254 solid-state radar is an open-array system with a 4-foot array. It delivers 250 W of power and a detection range from 6 meters to 96 nautical miles (177 km). This radar integrates advanced technologies to enhance situational awareness at sea.
Advanced Detection and Safety
The GMR Fantom™ 254 uses MotionScope™ technology to identify moving targets via Doppler effect, displaying them in different colors. This feature aids in collision avoidance, locating bird flocks, and tracking weather conditions. Automatic MARPA acquisition allows tracking up to 30 targets without manual intervention, based on radar returns, boundary zones, guard zones, or MotionScope. Pulse compression technology ensures high-resolution imaging and maximizes energy for improved target detection and identification.
Navigation and Integration Features
With a 4-foot (121.92 cm) array and a 1.8-degree horizontal beam width, the GMR Fantom™ 254 radar operates at rotation speeds of 24 and 48 RPM. The 48 RPM speed is available in single-range mode with MotionScope disabled and for range settings under 12 nautical miles. Scan-to-Scan Averaging reduces sea clutter and interference, while the dynamic sea filter automatically adjusts gain based on conditions. True Echo Trails display faint trails of moving targets, accounting for boat movement, to quickly identify potential threats.
The GMR Fantom™ 254 is compatible with Garmin GPSMAP chartplotters from the 7x2, 9x2, 10x2, 12x2, 7400, 7600, 8000, 8200, 8400, and 8600 series. It allows radar overlay on the chartplotter’s display, a function optimized with a heading sensor or optional autopilot. It also includes features such as Auto Bird Gain, Dynamic Auto Gain, VRM (Variable Range Markers), and EBL (Electronic Bearing Lines) for quick measurements. The unit has an IPX6 waterproof rating, supports a maximum wind load of 80 knots, and operates on 10–32 V power. Its full dimensions are 40.3 cm in height by 131.4 cm in diameter, with a total weight of 20.9 kg (antenna 5.2 kg, pedestal 15.7 kg). It operates nearly silently and has low power consumption.
