Detailed description
Performance and mechanical integration
The Raymarine type 2 short 24V mechanical linear actuator is a high-performance autopilot actuator designed for sailboats and powerboats requiring significant thrust force. Unlike type 1 models, this type 2 actuator offers superior robustness for demanding steering systems while maintaining a compact installation footprint thanks to its 300 mm stroke. Powered by 24V, it integrates seamlessly with Raymarine course computers (such as the ACU or SPX series) to ensure rapid and surgically precise rudder response.
Installation and rudder geometry
This mechanical actuator acts directly on the rudder quadrant or tiller arm. Installation requires rigorous alignment to ensure maximum mechanical efficiency: the push arm must be strictly perpendicular to the tiller arm when the rudder is in the central position (alignment variation tolerance less than 5 degrees). Weighing 7.72 kg, its industrial design requires mounting on a structure capable of absorbing significant loads. To maintain optimal performance, Raymarine recommends a full inspection every 1000 hours of use or every 2 years.
Electrical requirements and wiring
To ensure stable 24V power supply without voltage drop (which could reset the system), cable sizing is critical. According to the manufacturer's installation specifications, 4 mm² (12 AWG) wiring is required for lengths up to 3 meters, 6 mm² (10 AWG) up to 5 meters, and up to 16 mm² (6 AWG) for lengths up to 16 meters. Adhering to these cross-sections and EMC installation guidelines (keeping at least 1 meter away from VHF cables and 2 meters from HF signals) ensures total immunity to radio interference.
