Detailed description
Detailed description
The Simrad AP44 autopilot control unit (part number 000-13289-001) is a dedicated control unit designed to provide precise navigation and an intuitive user interface. Integrating Simrad Continuum™ steering technology, it enables reliable and high-performance autopilot operation. This unit features a 4.1-inch optically bonded color display with 320 x 240 pixel resolution and 600 nits brightness, ensuring optimal visibility under various lighting conditions thanks to its transflective LCD technology.
Design and connectivity
Weighing 0.32 kg and with compact dimensions of 118 x 115 x 48.5 mm (or 118 x 115 x 28 mm depending on sources), the AP44 has a modern low-profile "glass helm" design that facilitates aesthetic integration into contemporary dashboards. Its IPx7 waterproof rating ensures resistance to marine environments. The unit is powered by 12 V DC with a typical power consumption of 1.35 W (max 1.8 W) and operates within a temperature range of -25°C to +65°C. Certified NMEA 2000® connectivity (1 Micro-C port, 3 LEN, network load of 3 LEN) ensures seamless integration with existing Simrad navigation systems, including NAC-2 and NAC-3 autopilot computers.
Advanced autopilot features
The AP44 interface includes four buttons and a rotary knob with press-to-validate function, enabling quick and precise heading adjustments. It offers various autopilot modes, including heading hold, No Drift mode (to counteract wind and current effects via GPS), waypoint navigation (NAV), wind mode, and Power Steer FU assisted steering. Automated turning patterns are also available for specific maneuvers. Compared to control via a multifunction display, the AP44 provides direct tactile feedback and physical controls that may be preferred in rough sea conditions or during maneuvers requiring immediate responsiveness. Installation is simplified by self-calibration and tuning functions, including automatic compass calibration with a Simrad Precision-9 compass.
