The DD15 power unit, jointly developed by B&G and Simrad, is a high-performance direct-drive autopilot actuator designed for sailboats from 30 to 40 feet. This mechanical unit connects directly to the rudder stock, minimizing play and latency often found in traditional cable, chain, or hydraulic systems. With an output torque of 150 Kgm (equivalent to 150 Nm), the DD15 ensures precise and responsive rudder control, even in demanding sea conditions. Its weight is optimized at 12 kg, facilitating integration without compromising the boat's structural performance. Its compact dimensions, relative to its output power, represent a significant advantage for onboard installation.
Advanced motor and clutch technology
At the heart of the DD15 lies a flat-wound (pancake) electric motor, selected for its unique properties: a wide, flat rotor that guarantees high starting torque and immediate response to autopilot control signals. This motor achieves remarkable efficiency of 72.5%, surpassing the 50% maximum of conventional DC motors. This performance translates into minimal power consumption, averaging only 2 A at 12V, maximizing mechanical power output. This efficiency is critical for long passages and regattas where energy autonomy is crucial. The unit also integrates a patented electromagnetic clutch. Unlike friction clutches, this solution uses spring-loaded pins controlled by the autopilot computer, offering low friction in disengaged mode, reduced power consumption of 1.2 A at 12V when the clutch is powered (it disengages when unpowered), and no wear over time.
System integration and compatibility
The DD15 is designed for seamless integration with B&G and Simrad autopilot systems. It is compatible with Simrad AC10 (J3000X), AC20 (J300X), AC42N, NAC-3, and AC70 controllers, as well as B&G H5000 and Triton² controllers and Simrad AP44 and AP48 control displays. This broad compatibility makes it a versatile solution for a wide range of sailboats. Installation requires mounting the RF300 rudder feedback unit provided with 10 m of cable. The direct-drive design ensures a solid and durable mechanical connection. Compared to hydraulic drives like the Simrad RPU160, the DD15 offers more direct response and superior energy efficiency for a similar sailboat size, while compared to belt or chain drives, it eliminates slipping, play, and wear issues, ensuring consistent heading accuracy.
