For a negative-ground vehicle, follow these steps:

Connect the POSITIVE clamp (RED) of the charger to the battery's POSITIVE terminal (POS, P, +) that is not grounded. Connect the NEGATIVE clamp (BLACK) to the vehicle chassis or engine block, away from the battery. Avoid the carburetor, fuel lines, or sheet metal body parts. Connect to a sturdy metal part of the frame or engine block. Plug the AC cord into the wall outlet.

When the battery is outside the vehicle, proceed as follows:

Connect the POSITIVE clamp (RED) of the charger to the POSITIVE terminal (POS, P, +) of the battery. Connect the NEGATIVE clamp (BLACK) to the NEGATIVE terminal (NEG, N, –) of the battery. Plug the AC cord into the wall outlet. Avoid facing the battery during the final connection.
