Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for comprehensive monitoring of battery banks, the BMV-712 Smart battery monitor from VICTRON ENERGY features Bluetooth connectivity for simplified management and control via the VictronConnect app. This allows customization of settings, viewing of key data on a single screen, access to history, and software updates for the monitor directly from a smartphone or tablet, integrating the BMV-712 Smart into the Victron Energy Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem.
Installation and advanced features
Installation of the BMV-712 Smart is simplified by a quick-connect printed circuit board on the shunt. The monitor connects to the shunt via a standard 10-meter RJ12 telephone cable, and a 2-meter battery cable with fuse is also included. The kit includes a separate front panel for square or round screen appearance, a mounting ring for rear installation, and screws for front mounting. The device is rated IP55, indicating protection against dust and water jets, but is not intended for direct outdoor use.
This monitor stands out for its ability to monitor mid-point voltage of batteries connected in series, a critical function to prevent premature failure of an expensive bank due to a faulty cell or battery. To maximize the lifespan of series-connected lead-acid batteries, using a battery balancer such as the VICTRON ENERGY BMS012201000 is recommended. The BMV-712 Smart has extremely low current consumption, less than 1 mA (0.7 Ah per month at 12 V and 0.6 Ah per month at 24 V), which is particularly important for Li-ion batteries where deep discharge can cause irreversible damage. A bistable alarm relay is integrated, preventing increased current draw during an alarm.
Monitoring and system integration
The VICTRON ENERGY BMV-712 Smart provides essential data such as battery voltage, current, power, consumed amp-hours, state of charge (SoC), and remaining time at current discharge rate. It offers programmable visual and audible alarms, as well as a programmable relay to cut non-critical loads or start a generator. The included 500 A quick-connect shunt has a shunt selection capacity up to 10,000 A. A VE.Direct communication port is present for integration with other Victron Energy equipment, such as GX devices (Color Control GX, Venus GX), enabling centralized monitoring and data storage on the VRM portal. The device stores a wide range of historical events, allowing evaluation of usage patterns and battery health. It accepts a wide input voltage range of 6.5 to 70 V and offers high current measurement resolution of 10 mA (0.01 A). An auxiliary input can measure the voltage of a second battery, temperature, or mid-point voltage, with corresponding alarm and relay settings. Measurement accuracy is ±0.4% for current and ±0.3% for voltage.
