Designed to optimize solar energy harvesting, the Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT 250/70-Tr charge controller is a solution for marine and land-based photovoltaic systems requiring efficient management. This controller features ultra-fast MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) technology, capable of improving energy production by up to 30% compared to PWM controllers and up to 10% compared to slower MPPT controllers, particularly under cloudy skies where light intensity varies constantly.
Performance and Energy Efficiency
The SmartSolar MPPT 250/70-Tr automatically manages battery voltages of 12V, 24V, or 48V, with manual configuration possible for 36V systems. It delivers a nominal charging current of 70 A and supports PV power up to 1000 W for 12V batteries, 2000 W for 24V, 3000 W for 36V, and 4000 W for 48V. Its maximum PV input voltage is 250 VDC, with a maximum start-up and operating voltage of 245 V. Conversion efficiency exceeds 99%, without the need for a cooling fan, ensuring increased reliability and standby consumption below 35 mA at 12V and 20 mA at 48V.
Advanced Battery Management and Protection
This controller integrates a fully programmable multi-stage adaptive charging algorithm, complemented by eight pre-programmed algorithms selectable via a rotary switch. Default charging voltages include 14.4 V (absorption) and 13.8 V (float) for 12V systems, adjustable for other voltages. It includes a recovery function for fully discharged batteries, including Li-ion batteries with built-in disconnect function. In terms of protection, the SmartSolar MPPT 250/70-Tr offers protection against PV and battery polarity reversal, PV and output short circuits, as well as overheating protection with power derating.
Connectivity and System Integration
The controller is equipped with built-in Bluetooth Smart, enabling wireless configuration, monitoring, and updates via the VictronConnect app. It also features VE.Direct and VE.Can ports for wired connections to GX devices such as the Color Control GX, facilitating remote monitoring via the VRM portal. Up to 25 units can be synchronized in parallel via VE.Can, and up to 10 units via Bluetooth, offering flexibility for large installations. An optional plug-in LCD display is available for direct control. The programmable relay can trigger alarms or other events.
