Fixed and Portable VHF: Choosing the Right Option
The choice between a fixed VHF and a portable VHF depends on your type of navigation and your specific needs. Fixed VHFs offer superior range and easy integration with other navigation equipment, while portable VHFs provide flexibility and can serve as a backup solution in case of electrical failure. It is essential to consider transmit power, waterproofing, and features such as DSC (Digital Selective Calling).
AIS: Identify and Be Identified
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is an automatic transmission system that identifies vessels and tracks their real-time position. It significantly enhances safety at sea by providing critical information about nearby vessels, such as their name, heading, speed, and status. Choosing between an AIS Class A or Class B transponder depends on your vessel size and navigation area.
VHF and AIS Antennas: Optimizing Range
The performance of your VHF/AIS system largely depends on the quality of the antenna. A well-chosen and properly installed antenna maximizes range and communication clarity. It is important to consider antenna length, gain, impedance, and the quality of the coaxial cable used for the connection.
