Sailboat chartplotter comparator — Skysat

5 twelve-inch multifunction displays compared on the criteria that matter in sailing: dedicated functions (SailSteer, Layline, ForwardScan), autopilot/radar/AIS integration, integrated or networked fishfinder, charting. Workshop recommendation by program. Transparent mention of Raymarine Axiom in FAQ (not distributed by Skysat).

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • IRC sailboat racing / serious regatta: B&G Zeus SR 12" (€4,078 ex. VAT). UltraWide sailboat-specific screen, SailSteer, real-time Layline, native H5000 integration.
  • Offshore cruising 40-50 ft sailboat: B&G Zeus 3S 12" (€3,318 ex. VAT) if existing B&G ecosystem (Halo + NAC-3). The sailboat workshop standard for 5 years.
  • Mixed sail + power 30-40 ft: Garmin GPSMAP 1222xsv (€2,938 ex. VAT). Integrated CHIRP fishfinder, Reactor autopilot + Fantom radar ecosystem.
  • Sailboat without integrated fishfinder: Garmin GPSMAP 1222 (€2,728 ex. VAT). Save €200 if fishfinder is on another network screen.
  • Fishing boat / planning / motorboat: Lowrance HDS-12 Pro (€2,865 ex. VAT). Active Imaging HD + LiveSight, fishing-optimized.
  • For deeper integration: screen size matters less than network integration. A well-integrated 12" H5000 is better than an isolated 16".

Skysat workshop verdict — by program

Our recommendation by navigation program, based on 200+ MFD installations on sailboats 2020-2026.

Racing

IRC racing + serious regatta — 40-50 ft sailboat

The B&G Zeus SR 12" (€4,078 ex-VAT) is our sailboat racing choice. The UltraWide screen displays SailSteer + chart + instrument data simultaneously without overlapping. SailingTime, Layline, and StartLine are native features (not firmware add-ons). Direct integration with the H5000 processor and WS720/730 sensors — no NMEA buffer degrading frequency. For racing boats, add a 2nd screen (Zeus SR 16" or Glass Helm) at the mast.

Total installed screen + chartplotter + GPS antenna budget: ~ €4,600 excl. VAT per station

Cruising sailboat

Offshore cruising 35-50 ft — standard sailboat

The B&G Zeus 3S 12" (3,318 € HT) has been our go-to chartplotter for cruising sailboats for 5 years. It’s not the UltraWide of the SR, but SailSteer and real-time Layline are where it matters. NAC-3 + Halo + WS320 integration works without a buffer. Saves 760 € HT vs. the Zeus SR — useful if sensor/pilot budget is a priority.

Installed screen + chartplotter + GPS budget: ~ €3,800 excl. VAT

Mixed sail/power

30-40 ft sailboat-motorboat — versatile use

The Garmin GPSMAP 1222xsv (€2,938 excluding VAT) is the right choice when mixing sailing and powerboating, occasional fishing, and an existing Garmin ecosystem (handheld GPS, Reactor 40, Fantom radar). The integrated CHIRP fishfinder eliminates the need for an additional network sounder box. Basic sailing functions are adequate for coastal cruising.

Screen + CHIRP sounder + GPS budget: ~ €3,500 excl. VAT

Fishing / motorboat

Motorboat or planing hull — high-resolution fishfinder for fishing

The Lowrance HDS-12 Pro (2 865 € HT) is designed for structured fishing: Active Imaging HD + LiveSight provide a subsea structure readout unmatched in sailing. SolarMAX HD is readable in full Bahamian sunlight. Not the right choice for a pure sailboat — it lacks SailSteer/Layline functions and native B&G/Garmin integration. Limited to fishing boats / motorboats / day cruisers.

Screen + Active Imaging HD 3-in-1 transducer budget: ~ 3 100 € HT

Errors spotted in the workshop

The 3 mistakes that come up when a customer chooses their MFD without a workshop audit.

  1. Choosing 16" to 'get more screen' on a 38-foot sailboat.

A 16" screen weighs more, takes up more space, and consumes more power. At 1.5 m viewing distance from the cockpit, a 12" screen is already at the upper limit of visual usefulness. A 16" screen becomes relevant only on sailboats 50+ feet with an interior helm station. For 30-45 foot sailboats, a 12" screen is the optimal choice. Savings: €1,500 to €2,000 ex-VAT vs a 16".

  2. Buying a Garmin GPSMAP for a sailboat already equipped with B&G H5000.

Garmin and B&G/Navico communicate via NMEA 2000 (adequate for position, average wind) but not via proprietary protocols (SailSteer B&G, Reactor Garmin). Result: half of sailing functions are lost when switching Garmin to an existing B&G platform. Always stay within a single ecosystem: all B&G, all Garmin, or all Lowrance.

  3. Buying the GPSMAP 1222 without a transducer, then wanting to add a transducer 6 months later.

The 1222 is €200 cheaper than the 1222xsv excluding VAT but requires a Garmin GSD-26 network sounder box (~€800 excluding VAT) if you want to add a sounder later. Buying the 1222xsv with the integrated sounder from the start costs €200 net — far cheaper than GSD-26 + wiring + installation labor. The 1222 without a sounder only makes sense if the boat already has a dedicated sounder on the network.
