Electric actuators: power at the service of precision
The electric actuator is the muscle of the autopilot. It converts the computer's instructions into physical movement on the tiller, ensuring precise and responsive course keeping, even in challenging conditions. At Skysat, drawing on our experience in offshore racing, we rigorously select the highest-performing and most reliable electric actuators. Here you will find a range of actuators suited to different types of boats and applications, as well as technical information to help you make the best choice.
choose the right actuator
Choosing the right electric actuator is crucial for your autopilot's performance. Several factors must be considered, including the boat's size, the type of steering (tiller or wheel), the displacement, and typical sailing conditions. An undersized actuator will struggle to maintain course in heavy seas, while an oversized one will be unnecessarily energy-intensive.
- Raymarine Type 1: Compact linear actuator, ideal for sailboats up to 10 tons. SeaTalk NG compatible for easy integration with Raymarine systems.
- B&G Triton² Pilot Drive Unit: Robust rotary actuator, designed for performance sailboats up to 15 tonnes. NMEA 2000 integration for seamless communication with B&G instruments.
- Lewmar Mamba Drive: Electric hydraulic actuator, particularly suited to large sailboats requiring significant power. Requires a compatible hydraulic system.
integration and compatibility
Integrating the electric actuator into your navigation system is a crucial aspect that should not be overlooked. Ensure the actuator's compatibility with your autopilot computer and other onboard instruments. Seamless communication between the various components guarantees optimal performance and increased reliability.
- Power supply voltage check: Electric actuators typically operate on 12V or 24V. Make sure you choose a model compatible with your electrical installation.
- Communication protocol compatibility: NMEA 2000 and SeaTalk NG are the most common protocols. Check the actuator's compatibility with your onboard network.
- Mechanical adaptation: Installing the actuator requires precise mechanical adaptation to the bar. Refer to the technical diagrams and installation guides provided by the manufacturer.
💡 Skysat's advice
Before proceeding with the installation, carefully check that your boat's electrical system is functioning correctly. Unstable voltage or faulty wiring can damage the actuator and compromise your safety while boating.
