LED Bulbs & Strips for Boats: Choosing Based on Use

This collection includes LED solutions for replacing existing bulbs, adding discreet linear lighting, or creating a more uniform onboard ambiance. The right choice depends primarily on four criteria: the base or format, available voltage, waterproof rating, and color temperature.

Replacing an Existing Bulb

For a simple refit, start by identifying the fixture base: BA15D, BAY15D, G4, MR16, or another format. Then check the boat’s voltage, available space in the light or ceiling fixture, and the desired light output. An overly powerful bulb can dazzle in a cabin; a weak one may make a chart table or technical area uncomfortable.

LED Strips: Adhesive, COB, or Neon

Adhesive strips work well for indirect lighting under furniture, behind handrails, in lockers, or along a bimini. COB versions provide a more continuous line of light with fewer visible dots. An IP20 rating is sufficient only in dry, protected indoor areas. For lockers, companionways, cockpits, or areas prone to splashes, choose IP65, IP67, or IP68 based on exposure. Voltage is equally important: a 12V installation cannot accept a 24V strip without a converter, and a long strip consumes more than a simple bulb. Check the power per meter, cable cross-section, and circuit protection.

Profiles improve the look and mechanically protect the strip. A surface-mount LED profile makes visible mounting under furniture or roof easier, while a recessed LED profile provides a cleaner integration if the support allows it.

Ambiance, Boat Zones, and Control

Warm white is comfortable in cabins and living areas. Neutral or cool white is better for technical zones, preparation, or visibility. Red, blue, or CRGBW are mainly useful for ambiance or certain nighttime uses.
