Two architectures, often confused. The dedicated BMS (Victron) controls and protects a battery bank you size yourself — modular, scalable. The battery with integrated BMS (Mastervolt, MG) includes its own BMS — all-in-one, more expensive per kWh, but simpler. We compare the 5 solutions distributed by Skysat, and above all: which one for which program. 2026 ex-works prices.

Small / medium bank — simplicity
For a small or medium-sized battery bank, or a simple refit, the lithium battery with integrated BMS is the better choice: a finished product with BMS and protections already onboard, and system warranty. At Skysat, the Mastervolt MLi Ultra 12/3000 (€2,054 ex VAT) integrates natively with a CZone / MasterBus ecosystem (Bénéteau, Jeanneau, Bavaria yachts); the MG Energy HE Series 24V 304Ah (€2,990 ex VAT) targets demanding programs (8,000-cycle cyclability, open CAN). More expensive per kWh, but no assembly study required.
Integrated battery + installation: from ~ €2,054 ex VAT (wiring excluded)
View MLi UltraLarge scalable bank — custom
Whenever you need to size the battery bank yourself, modify it later, or aim for the best €/kWh on large volumes, switch to a dedicated Victron BMS. Our standard workshop unit remains the Lynx Smart BMS 500 (€968 ex VAT): centralized shunt, VE.Can + NMEA 2000, native MultiPlus / MPPT integration. It requires engineering (cell selection, class T fuse, Lynx distribution), but the architecture is modular and durable.
Dedicated BMS + Lynx distributor + class T fuse: ~ €1,500 ex VAT (cells excluded)
View Lynx Smart BMS 500Coastal / small bank — tight budget
For a small coastal bank built around cells of your choice, the Victron Smart BMS CL 12/100 (€161 ex VAT) is the entry-level dedicated BMS: it controls and protects up to 100 A, with VE.Direct communication, compliant with standards. At this budget level, a dedicated BMS remains the most economical option — an integrated battery only makes sense beyond that, for plug-and-play convenience.
Dedicated BMS + accessories: ~ 250 € VAT excluded installed (cells not included)
View Smart BMS CLNH fuses are insufficient — Icc lithium exceeds 30 kA. Class T calibrated at max BMS current + 20%.
The lead-acid battery profile (3 phases) destroys the cells. Wakespeed WS500, Balmar MC-614, or Victron Orion XS required.
Without a Load Dump absorber, the BMS triggers during charging → overvoltage → alternator diodes burned out.
Not directly: the Victron BMS manages a bank of cells that you add; the MLi Ultra / MG HE is a complete battery with integrated BMS. The comparison is based on the architecture, not the unit price (comparing a BMS at ~€150-1000 to a battery at ~€2000-3000 makes no sense — one manages, the other stores).
External (Victron Lynx Smart) if you need centralized shunting, independent charge/discharge disconnection, and ABYC E-13 compliance. Internal (Mastervolt MLi, MG Energy) for simplified plug-and-play integration and a single all-in-one pack + BMS solution. Neither is inherently superior — the choice depends on the target electrical architecture.
Technically yes, but not recommended in practice. The BMS communicates with its own chargers via its native bus. Without a common bus, you lose intelligent control (current modulation, preventive alarms, balancing). If mixing is necessary, plan for an NMEA 2000 gateway and accept a loss of precision.
Yes for all marine LFP packs. Without a BMS, you violate the IEC 62619 (cell), ISO 16315 (electric propulsion), and ISO 10133 (low-voltage circuits) standards. In the event of a claim, the insurer has grounds for exclusion. The BMS is not a comfort accessory; it is the mandatory safety device.
At 80% DoD in offshore cruising (200-300 cycles/year): 12-15 years for Mastervolt (4,000 cycles), 15-18 years for Victron (5,000 cycles), 20-25 years for MG Energy (8,000 cycles). Subject to correct thermal profile conditions (< 35 °C per cell) and BMS programming compliant with specifications.
Victron: 24–48 h via importer network (Eldotech, Bavaria Distrib). Mastervolt: 48–72 h via Mastervolt France importer. MG Energy: 3–5 days via importer or direct order from Netherlands. Critical in offshore racing where downtime costs more than the part.
Highly recommended for lithium refits ≥ 200 Ah. The audit (1-2 h on-site or remotely) validates the consistency of the alternator chain + BMS + charger + DC-DC + protection. Cost: 250-400 € HT, deductible from the quote if the refit is confirmed at Skysat. Request an audit →
Skysat has distributed Victron Energy, Mastervolt, and MG Energy Systems since 2018. This comparison reflects our cumulative installation experience from 87 sailboat refits between 2022 and 2026. The 2026 prices are indicative distributor prices (VAT excluded), excluding wiring and workshop labor. The datasheet cycle counts do not reflect real-world usage — thermal profile and BMS programming quality have a greater impact on longevity.
