Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for Garmin Reactor™ 40 Kicker autopilot systems, the ECU 14 electronic control unit (ECU) is a central component. It processes data received from the CCU (Course Computer Unit) to precisely control the steering and throttle actuators of the kicker motor. This unit is essential for maintaining heading and speed, specifically for vessels equipped with auxiliary or trolling motors.
Integration and technical performance
The Garmin ECU 14 stands out for its technical specifications suited to the marine environment. Its compact dimensions of 17.5 x 14.2 x 6.5 cm (6.9” x 5.6” x 2.6”) facilitate onboard integration. It operates within an extended power supply voltage range of 10 to 32 volts, with a typical consumption of 1 to 2 amps on average, varying depending on navigation conditions. The unit is designed to operate within a temperature range of -20° to 70° C and features an IPX7 waterproof rating, ensuring resistance to temporary immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
Positioning and compatibility
The ECU 14 is specifically designed for Garmin’s Reactor 40 Kicker range. Unlike universal autopilot computers or systems dedicated to main hydraulic or mechanical engines, this ECU is optimized for managing kicker motors. It requires connection to an existing or to-be-built NMEA 2000 network and interfaces with a Garmin CCU and a compatible Garmin display or chartplotter. Installation requires careful attention to the wiring constraints of the steering and throttle actuators, whose cables cannot be cut or extended, influencing the ECU’s positioning for optimal Reactor 40 Kicker system performance.
