Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for the Garmin GHP 12 autopilot system, the Garmin linear actuator type 2 (part number 010-11573-00) is a standalone Class B hydraulic drive unit. This actuator is specifically suited for sailboats up to 35.8 metric tons (79,000 lbs), covering a boat length range of 20 to 70 feet. It provides the necessary rudder power for precise and reliable autopilot steering.
Integration and technical performance
The type 2 linear actuator stands out for its complete integration, including a rudder angle feedback sensor. This feature is essential for the GHP 12 autopilot controller, as it enables accurate display of the rudder position, contributing to smooth maneuvers and preventing overcompensation. The unit is designed to withstand a maximum thrust of 2,380 lbs (1,080 kg) and operates on a supply voltage of 10 to 30 Vdc, with an average current draw of 3-4 A for the motor and 1 A for the clutch at 12 V. Its 303 mm (12 inches) stroke provides sufficient movement range for most rudder configurations.
Design and reliability for the marine environment
The drive unit is designed for installation below deck, ensuring resilience in the below-deck environment. It also complies with the EMC standard (EN 60945:2002) for marine navigation and radio communication equipment. Weighing approximately 9.07 kg (20 lbs), it is designed for robust below-deck installation, avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures, excessive vibrations, and fumes. Unlike systems requiring complex hydraulic connections, this actuator is factory pre-filled and tested, simplifying installation while requiring physical stops to limit stroke and prevent unit damage. It complements the GHP 12, which, unlike some all-in-one competitor systems, requires an external power unit matched to the vessel's displacement.
