Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for single-outboard monohulls under 25 feet, the Garmin Reactor™ 40 Compact autopilot computer is a navigation assistance solution for hydraulic steering systems. This system is particularly suited to lightweight vessels and offers assisted navigation at moderate to high speeds, reducing helm fatigue. It differs from the more powerful Reactor 40 models, which are recommended for applications requiring precise course holding at low speed, such as fishing or in rough seas.
AHRS Technology and Heading Accuracy
The system’s core is a 9-axis solid-state Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS). This technology minimizes heading errors, course deviations, and rudder movements while optimizing power consumption. The autopilot adapts to sea conditions to maintain the desired course, even in pitch or roll. The system operates on a voltage range of 10 to 20 volts.
Integration and Advanced Features
This computer integrates with the NMEA 2000® network, enabling direct control from a compatible Garmin chartplotter display or up to three Garmin GHC™ (GHC 20 or GHC 50) helm control units. It also supports MARPA functions and overlay of charts with a Garmin radar and chartplotter. The Auto Guidance feature, available with a compatible chartplotter and G3 Vision charts, enables automatic GPS route following. The optional Shadow Drive™ technology disengages the autopilot during manual helm input and reactivates it automatically. For sailboats, it provides wind-holding and tacking/jibing with an external wind sensor.
Usage Limitations
The Reactor™ 40 Compact computer is not designed for installations with electric assist, boats over 25 feet, engines over 150 horsepower, or hulls with an angle greater than 12 degrees. It is important to note that the hydraulic pump must be mounted within 1.8 meters (6 feet) of the steering cylinder for optimal system performance.
