Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed specifically for vessels equipped with Volvo Penta Inboard Performance Systems (IPS) propulsion and Z-drive joystick propulsion systems, the Garmin Reactor™ 40 Compact (010-11052-68) autopilot computer provides an advanced and fully integrated autopilot solution. This system is developed to optimize navigation and maneuvering of boats fitted with these specific propulsion systems.
Accuracy and installation flexibility
At the heart of the system is the 9-axis solid-state Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS), enabling almost anywhere and any-orientation mounting flexibility for the Course Control Unit (CCU). This advanced technology ensures rapid and accurate response to sea conditions, even in pitch or roll, reducing power consumption, minimizing heading errors, and route deviations. The CCU, 91.4 mm in diameter and weighing 159 g, is housed in a high-impact plastic, fully waterproof enclosure compliant with IEC 529 IPX7 standards, and operates across a temperature range of -15 °C to 55 °C.
Integration and advanced features
The Reactor 40 Compact offers seamless integration with the NMEA 2000® network, enabling autopilot control from a compatible Garmin chartplotter or the Garmin GHC™ 50 autopilot instrument (often included in bundles or available separately). Commissioning and calibration are simplified via assistants such as Dockside Wizard and Sea Trial Wizard. Features include heading hold, tacking in steps, wind hold, and tacking/jibing (with optional wind sensor). Paired with a chartplotter and compatible charts, it unlocks advanced functions such as route tracking and Auto Guidance+™.
Positioning and connectivity
This computer is positioned as a dedicated solution for Volvo Penta users, offering more direct and optimized integration than generic autopilot systems. It connects to a 9–16 V NMEA 2000 power supply and has an NMEA 2000 LEN of 3 (150 mA). The 3 m CCU cable allows optimal positioning. Wireless remote control capability via compatible Garmin devices, such as the Reactor remote or certain quatix® smartwatches, adds a layer of convenience for remote operation.
