Display Cyclops Loads: Bridge and Network

The Short Answer

To display Cyclops loads outside the application, a complete and compatible chain is required: identified sensors, suitable bridge, protected power supply, output protocol, exact cables, healthy NMEA 2000 or Ethernet network, and a display capable of utilizing the data. Start by inventorying the references and the target display. Then draw the data path and power supply, and associate each sensor with its key or QR code. Validate the zero, direction, units, label, and a known load before creating alarms. A visible value is not yet a structural limit or proof of calibration.

Design the Chain Before Ordering

Write the chain in a simple form: “sensor → wireless link or cable → bridge → network → display or software”. For each arrow, note the protocol, connector, power supply, and cable reference.

This method quickly reveals gaps: a display may have Ethernet but not the expected display function; a bridge may transmit over NMEA 2000 but require a specific cable; a custom sensor may use a different conversion than a wireless Smartlink.

The Cyclops Marine catalog distinguishes sensors, bridges, chargers, and cabling. Do not choose the cable by its appearance or generic name.

Inventory Sensors and Identifiers

Note the model, serial number, range, data key or QR code, and location of each sensor. Give a short, unambiguous label: “forestay”, “backstay”, “J0”, “bowsprit”, rather than “sensor 1”.

Keep this information separate from the only phone used during installation. It will be necessary after a replacement, reset, or bridge upgrade. Also associate the known manual and calibration date.

Before integration, check each sensor in the manufacturer's application. Check the battery status, zero load when applicable, and reaction to a safe progressive load. If the sensor reports an error, do not proceed as if the bridge will correct it.

Choose Micro Gateway or Multi Gateway Based on Proof

The bridge must be chosen based on the number and type of sensors, required interfaces, and documented functions. The Cyclops Micro Gateway has its own data sheet and configuration tool; the Multi Gateway addresses a broader architecture. The name “multi” does not prove compatibility with every display or sensor.

Check available inputs, the number of sensors managed, NMEA 2000 output, any Ethernet or manufacturer-specific links, and required auxiliary cables. For an existing installation, note hardware and software versions rather than assuming a recent screenshot corresponds to the installed unit.

Provide a dry, accessible location compatible with radio range and close to the necessary networks. Avoid enclosing the bridge behind metal masses without reception testing.

Connect NMEA 2000 as a Network, Not a Power Strip

If the output uses NMEA 2000, connect it to a drop cable from the backbone with the specified component. The backbone must have two terminators, a properly positioned power supply, and compliant length and current budget. The NMEA 2000 on Sailboats guide details these rules.

Do not create a third terminator to “boost the signal” and do not extend a drop cable like a backbone. Check network voltage and absence of faults before blaming the sensor.

SeaTalkng, proprietary connectors, and NMEA 2000 can carry compatible data in certain architectures, but the exact adapter cable and topology remain essential. A Cyclops to Raymarine or B&G cable is not a universal adapter for all generations.

Configure Each Channel Unambiguously

The Micro Gateway configuration tool exposes the unit identification, NMEA 2000 settings, and sensor association. Record the correct key, a label, the units, and the channel or instance used by the display.

Avoid two sensors having the same name or instance. After each addition, review the list from the bridge. Restart according to the procedure and verify that the configuration persists.

The refresh rate must be fast enough for the usage without unnecessarily saturating the network. Keep the factory default value if no documented requirement justifies modifying it. A high frequency does not transform a sensor into a certified safety instrument.

Validate the Displayed Value

Compare the Cyclops application and the onboard display simultaneously. Units, sign, zero, and trend must be consistent. Apply a known load in a safe setup or use the control procedure specified by the manufacturer.

A difference can arise from the channel, a unit conversion, rounding, an old associated sensor, or the refresh rate. Correct the cause before recording thresholds.

Document a capture and reference values. Repeat after an update, battery replacement, shock, disassembly, or recalibration.

Create Alarms from Validated Limits

An alarm should not be set to the sensor's WLL by default. The operational limit must come from the boat, rigging, sail, and relevant components, with a margin and logic validated by competent professionals.

Anticipate data loss, low battery, and frozen sensor cases. An absent or identical value during a maneuver does not mean the load is stable. Define what the crew should do for each alarm and train in controlled conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all NMEA 2000 displays show Cyclops loads?

No. The network can transport data without the display knowing how to present it. Check the functional compatibility and version of the display.

Does the bridge replace the application?

It allows integration with other equipment depending on the model, but the application remains useful for association, diagnostics, or certain configurations.

Can I set the alarm to the sensor's WLL?

Not by default. The threshold must respect the lowest limit of the structural system and a validated strategy for the boat.

Does displayed data prove that the sensor is calibrated?
