Skysat workshop verdict — by fishing program

Our recommendation by fishing use, based on 100+ Lowrance installations from 2020-2026.

Freshwater fishing

Freshwater / lakes / beginner

The Eagle 5 SplitShot (329 € HT) is Lowrance’s entry-level model covering 80 % of freshwater and small coastal boat uses. 5" readable screen (80° viewing angles), SplitShot CHIRP + DownScan transducer, GPS — mapping is added via microSD. No SideScan means no "side vision" — for precise fishing spots near structures, go directly for the Eagle 9 TripleShot. Its transducer port also accepts a TripleShot if you upgrade later.

Total budget screen + simple installation: ~ 430 € HT

Standard coastal

Standard coastal fishing — 5-7 m powerboat

The Eagle 7 SplitShot (459 € HT) is the coastal standard in the Eagle range. The 7" display offers 85° viewing angles, the CHIRP wide-angle + DownScan transducer (455/800 kHz) provides precise fish and structure readings, and IPX7 waterproofing handles spray. MOB waypoints and screenshot capture are included. If you fish regularly in both sea and lakes, this is the right price/function/screen-size compromise. Need side-scanning? The Eagle 7 TripleShot (549 € HT) adds SideScan for an extra 90 €.

Total budget screen + supplied transducer + GPS + simple install: ~ €580 ex-VAT

Flat-bottom boat

Structured fishing — flat-bottom boat 6-8 m

The Eagle 9 TripleShot (699 € HT) integrates a 3-in-1 transducer (CHIRP + DownScan + SideScan) that revolutionizes structured fishing: the SideScan provides a "sideways view" over several tens of meters on each side of the boat — ideal for spotting fish and structures nearby. The 9" 1024×600 screen ensures comfortable reading even in rough seas. This is a major qualitative leap compared to the Eagle 7.

Total budget screen + 3-in-1 transducer + GPS + install: ~ $885 USD ex-works

Pro runabout

Pro fishing / planing runabout 7-10 m

The HDS-9 Pro with Active Imaging HD transducer (€1,937 ex VAT) is Lowrance’s entry-level Pro unit — a multi-touch, scalable platform delivered with the Active Imaging HD 3-in-1 transducer (CHIRP + DownScan HD + SideScan HD) ready for immediate high-definition structure scanning. Scalable to LiveSight (live sonar) or a deep-water Carbon Transducer. If you want one extra inch of screen, the HDS Pro 10" + AIH (€2,243 ex VAT) sits just above it.

Total budget HDS-9 Pro with Active Imaging HD transducer: ~ 1 937 € HT

Racing

Competition fishing / fine-structured fishing — runabout 8-12 m

The HDS Pro 10" + Active Imaging HD (2 243 € HT) is Lowrance’s top model for fine-structured fishing. The Active Imaging HD 3-in-1 transducer (CHIRP + DownScan HD + SideScan HD) delivers near-photographic clarity of the bottom and structures — you can distinguish a rock from a fish school at 100 m on each side. In competitions, this is what sponsored Lowrance anglers use. Pair it with LiveSight to visualize fish in real time once you’ve located the spot.

Complete bundle budget + optional LiveSight + fine installation: ~ 3 700 € HT

Errors seen in the workshop

The 3 mistakes that come up when a customer chooses their Lowrance fishfinder without a workshop program audit.

  1. Buying the Eagle 7 SplitShot thinking it’s the same transducer as the TripleShot.

The two Eagle 7 models (SplitShot at 459 € HT and TripleShot at 549 € HT) share the same 7" display and housing. The difference lies in the transducer: the SplitShot offers CHIRP + DownScan (vertical vision only). The TripleShot adds SideScan (lateral vision over several tens of meters on each side). For an additional 90 € HT, the TripleShot unlocks lateral vision — for structured fishing, it’s well worth the extra cost. If you need to see structures around the boat, choose the TripleShot.

  2. Believing HDS-9 and HDS Pro 10" are equivalent.

The HDS-9 Pro with Active Imaging HD transducer (€1,937 ex-VAT) and the HDS Pro 10" + AIH (€2,243 ex-VAT) both use the same Active Imaging HD 3-in-1 transducer and the same platform. The only difference is screen size (9" vs 10"), for a price difference of ~€306 ex-VAT. If you run chartplotter and fishfinder simultaneously on a planing powerboat, the 10" is worth the extra cost; otherwise the 9" is more than adequate. Don’t buy a 16" "just to be safe" if your usage doesn’t justify it.

  3. Buying HDS Pro 10" to integrate a Halo radar.

The HDS Pro 10" is compatible with a Lowrance Halo radar (same Navico family). But it is not the best choice: for a radar + chartplotter + autopilot integration, a B&G Zeus (sailing) or a Garmin GPSMAP is better. The HDS Pro is designed for fishing, not tactical navigation. If you want an integrated Halo radar on a sailboat, see our marine radar comparison + sailboat chartplotter comparison.
