Radar: Should you throw away your old "microwave" radar to switch to Doppler?
Marine radar is undergoing the same shift as TVs in 2010: the magnetron—robust but power-hungry, slow to warm up, blind at close range—is being replaced by Solid State and Doppler. A handful of watts instead of a few kilowatts, instant power-up, detection from six meters instead of fifty, and color that immediately shows if a target is approaching.
