Jean-Pierre Dick

The architect of offshore performance

Jean-Pierre Dick holds a unique position in the international offshore racing scene. A graduate of veterinary school and holder of an MBA from HEC, he entered the professional circuit with a methodological rigor drawn from the business world. As a skipper-entrepreneur, he founded the team Absolute Dreamer, transforming the management of a sailing project into an optimized R&D structure. His approach is characterized by a cold analysis of data and a constant search for breakthrough innovations, making him one of the pioneers of the modern era of foiling monohulls.

Profile & technical approach

Jean-Pierre Dick's profile is distinguished by a culture of engineering applied to sailing. Unlike self-taught profiles, Dick approaches racing from a systemic perspective. He was one of the first to systematize the use of load cells and fiber optics to monitor the structural stresses of composite materials in real-time.

His historic collaboration with the design office VPLP and Guillaume Verdier led to the design of iconic hulls, notably the Paprec-Virbac line. His technical expertise also extends to connectivity and environmental data acquisition: he notably worked with Skysat for the design and integration of its onboard systems. This quest for reliability led him to develop energy autonomy solutions, integrating high-performance hydro-generators into his IMOCA boats early on.

Record & highlights

Jean-Pierre Dick's record is one of the densest on the offshore racing circuit, marked by notable dominance in double-handed events:

  • Four-time winner of the Transat Jacques Vabre (2003, 2005, 2011, 2017)
  • Two-time winner of the Barcelona World Race (2008, 2011)
  • Voted "Sailor of the Year" in 2011 by the French Sailing Federation.
  • Vendée Globe 2012-2013: A memorable 4th place after sailing over 2,600 nautical miles without a keel (appendage failure near the Azores), a demonstration of technical mastery and dynamic balancing of the boat via ballast.
  • Vendée Globe 2016-2017: 4th place on the IMOCA StMichel-Virbac, validating the effectiveness of early large-span foils in solo configuration.

Outlook

Today, Jean-Pierre Dick is directing his activities towards knowledge transfer and sustainable innovation. Through his company JP54, he develops fast-cruising yachts (fast-cruisers) incorporating technologies from racing, such as canting keels and intensive use of carbon fiber, to reconcile comfort and high nautical performance.

In parallel, he remains a leading technical consultant for the development of new racing platforms. His future projects focus on decarbonizing maritime transport, using his experience in managing airflow and hydrodynamics to advise on industrial sailing propulsion initiatives.
