Detailed description
Detailed description
The B&G WS720S Vertical Ocean Spec 1.05m Wind Sensor is a high-performance wind vane and anemometer designed for regattas and offshore racing. Its 1.05-meter high-modulus carbon vertical mast positions the sensor in an undisturbed airflow, above the sail plan, for maximum wind data acquisition accuracy. Its aerodynamic design ensures optimal stability and responsiveness. The WS720S is designed for direct integration with the B&G H5000 and WTP3 systems via its NMEA 0183 output.
Performance and precision for regattas
The WS720S sensor provides highly reliable wind data, essential for tactical decisions and autopilot operation. It measures wind speed over a range of 0.5 to 90 knots, with an accuracy of +/- 0.2 knots (between 2 and 80 knots) and a resolution of 0.1 knot. Wind angle accuracy is +/- 0.5°. Data is transmitted via the NMEA 0183 MWV,R sentence at a frequency of 10 Hz, ensuring real-time updates for maximum performance.
Positioning within the WS700 range
The WS720S is part of B&G's WS700 series of vertical sensors. With its 1.05 m (1.1 m) carbon mast, it is positioned as an "Ocean Spec" solution, offering greater height than the entry-level WS710 (0.8 m) model, while being more compact than the WS730S (1.4 m) and WS740S (1.8 m) versions. This model is specifically designed for racing sailboats that need to keep the sensor clear of aerodynamic disturbances generated by the sails, without opting for the longest masts in the range. As an "S" (Ocean Spec) version, it requires a custom mounting bracket.
Technical specifications and connectivity
The WS720S wind sensor is powered by 12V DC (9-16V DC range) and has a low power consumption of less than 0.2W (15mA at 12V). Primary connectivity is via an NMEA 0183 output with a 38400 baud serial port configuration. Connection to an NMEA 2000 network is possible via an optional interface. The sensor weighs 0.5 kg (without cable) and is IPX6 rated for water and dust resistance. It is designed to operate in a temperature range of -15°C to +55°C.
