Detailed description
Detailed description
The Ocean Signal SafeSea S100 radar search and rescue transponder is a professional-grade maritime safety device. Designed to meet the strict requirements of commercial and recreational vessels, this SART (Search and Rescue Transponder) operates on the X-band (9.2 to 9.5 GHz). When interrogated by the radar of a rescue vessel or aircraft, the S100 emits a response signal exceeding 400 mW, generating a series of dots on the rescuer’s radar screen for precise location up to 7.1 nautical miles.
Reliability and endurance in extreme conditions
Power is supplied by the LB3S battery module using iron disulfide and lithium (LiFeS2) chemistry. This specific chemistry ensures exceptional endurance, even in severe cold: the beacon provides 96 hours of standby followed by 12 hours of active operation at -20°C. Battery life is 5 years before replacement. The 89 g module contains less than 2 g of lithium and is classified as non-hazardous for transport. The device is designed to survive a 20-meter drop into water and remains watertight to a depth of 10 meters.
Positioning and SOLAS compliance
Unlike an AIS SART (such as the SafeSea S200 model in the same range, which transmits positioning data via VHF frequencies), the S100 uses traditional radar technology, ensuring universal compatibility with standard navigation radars. It meets the most stringent international standards, including IMO resolutions, IEC 61097-1 and IEC 60945 standards, and holds MED (Wheelmark) and FCC certifications. Supplied complete with mounting bracket, it integrates seamlessly with liferafts or the helm area while maintaining a one-meter safety distance from magnetic compasses.
