Adhesive probes: a discreet and efficient installation

Stick-on transducers are an ideal solution for boats whose hull design doesn't allow or justify drilling for a through-hull transducer. At Skysat, we understand the importance of a high-quality signal for fishing and navigation, even without an intrusive installation. Discover our selection of stick-on transducers, rigorously tested for performance and reliability.

advantages of adhesive probes

Bonded transducers offer a practical and less cumbersome alternative to traditional through-hull transducers. Installation takes place inside the hull, eliminating the need for drilling and the potential risk of water ingress. They are particularly well-suited to slender hulls or boats where drilling is not recommended.

  • Ease of installation: No drilling of the case, simplified and quick installation.
  • Adaptability: Suitable for a wide range of hulls (fiberglass, aluminum).
  • Reduced maintenance: No risk of soiling or external corrosion.
  • Hull integrity: Preserves the watertightness and structure of the boat.

choose the right probe to stick on

The choice of a bonded probe depends on several factors, including the hull material, the desired depth, and the required functionalities (temperature, speed). A thorough understanding of the technical specifications is crucial to ensure optimal performance. Particular attention should be paid to the type of adhesive used and the preparation of the bonding surface.

  • Case type: Check compatibility with the case material (maximum thickness).
  • Frequency: Choose the frequency appropriate for the depth and type of seabed. Higher frequencies offer better resolution but a shorter range.
  • Power: Determines the maximum detection depth. Higher power is needed for deep water.
  • Connectivity: Ensure compatibility with your multifunction display (NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000).

installation and performance

Proper installation is essential to ensure the performance of an adhesive transducer. The chosen location must be free of air bubbles and any structural interference. The use of a coupling fluid (mineral oil or glycerin) is often recommended to improve signal transmission. Hull thickness can affect transducer sensitivity. Testing is necessary to validate the installation and adjust the sounder settings.

  • Surface preparation: Meticulous cleaning and degreasing of the bonding area.
  • Coupling fluid: Use of a suitable liquid to optimize wave transmission.
  • Positioning: Choose a location without interference and with a suitable shell thickness.
  • Calibration: Adjust the sonar settings to compensate for signal attenuation due to the hull.

💡 Skysat's advice

Before permanently attaching your transducer, perform some tests while navigating with the transducer simply held in place with masking tape. This will allow you to validate the positioning and adjust the fishfinder settings before proceeding with the final installation.
