Detailed description
Detailed description
Designed for battery protection, the Victron Energy Battery Protect 12/24V 100A is an essential load-disconnect device for embedded systems. This Battery Protect automatically disconnects non-essential loads before the battery is fully discharged, preventing irreversible damage or insufficient power to start the engine. It can also serve as a charge switch to protect sensitive equipment from overvoltage, disconnecting the load if DC voltage exceeds 16V or 32V.
Technical Features and Performance
The Battery Protect 12/24V 100A automatically detects system voltage (12V or 24V) and offers simplified programming via a 7-segment LED display that indicates the selected setting. Current consumption is ultra-low, at just 1.5 mA in operation and 0.6 mA in standby or low-voltage cutoff mode, which is particularly relevant for Li-ion batteries. The device features flame-retardant protection via MOSFET switches, eliminating any risk of sparks. A special setting is available for Li-ion batteries, allowing direct control by an external BMS such as the VE.Bus BMS, and it can also be used as a charge switch between a battery charger and a Li-ion battery.
Alarm and Disconnection Management
This Victron Energy device includes a timed alarm output that activates if battery voltage drops below the pre-set disconnect level for more than 12 seconds, preventing false alarms caused by engine start. Load disconnection is also timed at 90 seconds after alarm activation (immediate if triggered by the VE.Bus BMS), while reconnection occurs 30 seconds after battery voltage returns to the reconnection threshold. Default thresholds are 10.5V or 21V for disconnection and 12V or 24V for engagement. The electronics are rated IP67 (encapsulated in resin) for enhanced protection, and the device can operate at full load between -40°C and +40°C.
Positioning in the Victron Energy Range
The Battery Protect BP-100 (100A) is positioned as an intermediate solution within the Victron Energy BatteryProtect series, offering a higher continuous current capacity than the BP-65 (65A) and suitable for a wide range of applications, without reaching the power of the BP-220 (220A). Unlike the Smart BatteryProtect, which offers Bluetooth connectivity, this model relies on programming via the "PROG pin to GND pin" method, providing a reliable alternative for installations where simplicity of configuration and robustness are prioritized over advanced communication features. It is critical to note that the Battery Protect is a unidirectional device, designed to manage current from the IN terminal (battery) to the OUT terminal (load) only, and is not suitable for reverse currents from direct charging sources. For inverters or charger/inverters, it must be used to control their remote port and not directly inline in the DC circuit.
