Battery isolators: isolate, switch, and secure DC circuits

A battery isolator allows physical isolation of a battery bank or main circuit from the rest of the installation. On a boat, it is a safety device as critical as a fuse: it enables shutting down a circuit for maintenance, isolating a faulty battery, cutting power to consumers during winter lay-up, or making the installation clear in an emergency.

This collection includes manual battery isolators, selectors, dual-circuit units, remote controls, battery hubs, and low-voltage electronic protection devices for 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V systems. They work with batteries, fuses, BMS, battery monitors, and contactors, solenoids & disconnect switches aboard, but do not replace these functions.

Battery isolator types

• On/off: cuts a single circuit or battery bank. This is the clearest solution for an engine bank, service bank, or main power feed.
• 1/2/Both/Off selector: allows choosing between two batteries or paralleling them. Suitable for some classic installations but must be used methodically to avoid manipulation errors.
• Dual circuit: switches two circuits simultaneously while keeping banks separate. Useful for engine + service when a single clear control is needed.
• Dual Circuit Plus: adds an emergency parallel function, often used to assist starting without improvised wiring.
• Remote control: motorized isolator or switching relay controllable from the panel, useful when the main isolator must remain close to the batteries.
• Electronic protection: automatically cuts a load in case of low voltage or a protection event. This is not a maintenance mechanical isolator.

How to choose

The primary criterion is the required function: isolating a battery, selecting between two banks, cutting two circuits together, remote control, or protecting a load from deep discharge. Next come continuous current rating, peak current, nominal voltage, number of poles, accessibility, and control type.

• Single bank: an on/off switch clearly labeled is often sufficient, with a rating above the actual maximum current.
• Engine + service: a dual circuit or Dual Circuit Plus avoids confusion between banks while keeping a quick control.
• High-current loads: windlass, bow thruster, or inverter require an isolator and cables sized for peaks, not just average current.
• Panel far from batteries: a motorized or remote model keeps high-current cable runs short.
• Lithium: verify coordination with the BMS, contactors, switching relays, and charging parameters.

AFD, bipolar, motorized: key points

The AFD function protects the alternator by preventing a sudden field interruption when the engine battery is cut on certain installations. A bipolar isolator cuts both positive and negative simultaneously, useful in specific architectures or isolated systems. A motorized isolator makes control from the cockpit or panel easier but must always remain understandable and accessible as a backup.

BatteryProtect-type devices should not be confused with a maintenance isolator. They are useful for protecting batteries from deep discharge but do not replace a mechanical isolator accessible when the installation must be powered down.

Common mistakes

• Selecting rating based solely on battery capacity, while peak current of the load is often the real criterion.
• Installing the isolator too far from the batteries, creating an unprotected high-current cable run.
• Confusing emergency paralleling with permanent use of two banks together.
• Cutting a charging source without considering the alternator, regulator, or lithium BMS.
• Neglecting labeling: in an emergency, the crew must immediately understand which bank or circuit is isolated.

On a clean marine installation, the battery isolator must be easy to understand, quick to reach, and consistent with circuit protections. We favor an architecture where each function is separate: the fuse protects the cable, the isolator isolates, the BMS protects lithium cells, the monitor measures, and the charge relay manages power distribution between banks when needed.
