Collection: Masthead lights

The masthead light (or white masthead light) is required for any mechanically propelled vessel over 7 meters in motion. It emits a white light covering a sector of 225°, i.e., 112.5° on each side of the boat’s longitudinal axis, forward. In accordance with COLREGs Rule 23, it must be visible at a minimum range of 2 NM (vessels 12-20 m) or 3 to 5 NM for larger vessels.

Positioning

On a sailboat, this light is typically mounted at mid-mast (masthead) or nearby, at least 1 meter above the anchor light if both are present. On a powerboat, it may be at the masthead or on a dedicated bracket. The minimum height depends on the vessel’s length (see COLREGs Annex I).

Mantagua variants

• Deck-mounted flat light 2NM — Masthead or Mast: horizontal mounting, compact housing, ideal for superstructures
• Competition horizontal light 2NM: lightweight version for regattas, without additional upper cover
• Tiny white 225°: compact version for vessels < 12 m
• Navipro 5NM: 5 nautical miles range, for vessels < 50 m, masthead or side mounting
• Side-mounted 2NM masthead or competition mast light: dual-use (mast or side) depending on mounting

Skysat note: do not confuse masthead light (225° white, power-driven vessel) with anchor light (360° white, at anchor) or masthead tricolor light (on a sailboat under sail, combining three colors). COLREGs obligations vary depending on the vessel’s state (under power, under sail, at anchor).
