Detailed description
Detailed description
The Navico NAIS-500 Class B AIS transponder, supplied with its GPS-500 antenna, is a compact and high-performance solution for enhancing safety at sea. This standalone Class B system transmits your vessel’s identity and position data while receiving that of other AIS-equipped vessels, enabling better anti-collision maneuver planning in high-traffic areas. Positioned as an economical alternative to Class A systems, the NAIS-500 is ideal for recreational boats and small commercial vessels, offering transmission power and reporting rate tailored to their specific needs.
Connectivity and System Integration
The NAIS-500 features versatile connectivity, integrating NMEA 2000 (LEN=1), two NMEA 0183 ports (one high-speed at 38,400 baud for chartplotters and one low-speed at 4,800 baud for other equipment), and a USB port (mini-B) for connection to a PC or Mac. This flexibility ensures seamless integration with Navico ecosystems, including Simrad multifunction displays (NSS, NSO, GO series), Lowrance (HDS Carbon, HDS Gen3), and B&G (Vulcan, Zeus series). The integrated NMEA 0183 multiplexing function optimizes data management across serial ports. The transponder is supplied with a multipole accessory cable for power (9.6 V – 31.2 V DC) and NMEA 0183 connections, as well as an input for an external silent-mode switch. A VHF antenna (SO-239 connector) and an external GPS antenna (SMA connector) are required, with the GPS-500 antenna included.
Technical Specifications and Robustness
Measuring 152 x 98 x 52 mm and weighing 260 g, the NAIS-500 is designed for discreet installation. It operates on a frequency range of 156.025 to 162.025 MHz with an output power of 33 dBm ± 1.5 dB. Its internal 50-channel GPS receiver complies with IEC 61108-1, ensuring reliable position acquisition. Average power consumption is 180 mA at 12 V DC, with a peak current of 2 A. Certified to IP67 and tested to IEC 60945 (Protected category), it provides optimal resistance to marine environments, supporting operating temperatures from -15°C to +55°C. LED indicators (power, error, reception, transmission/silent mode) offer quick diagnostics of the device’s status. The NAIS-500 complies with CE, FCC, Industry Canada, IEC 61108-1, and IEC 60945 certifications.
