Detailed description
Detailed description
The Simrad NAC-3 VRF autopilot pack is a solution designed for navigation on larger boats, including outboard and inboard/outboard motor vessels over 10 meters (35 feet). It includes the NAC-3 autopilot computer, a Precision-9 solid-state compass, and the NMEA 2000® cabling and connectors required for network integration. This system is the core of a complete autopilot setup, requiring the addition of a control unit and a power unit.
VRF Technology and System Integration
The Virtual Rudder Feedback (VRF) technology eliminates the need for a mechanical rudder feedback unit on boats equipped with outboard and inboard/outboard motors, simplifying installation without compromising steering accuracy. The NAC-3 computer is compatible with various power units, including Simrad RPU160 and RPU300 high-current hydraulic pumps, mechanical transmissions such as the Simrad DD15, HLD2000 series linear hydraulic rams, and solenoid valves. The Precision-9 compass provides heading, rate of turn, pitch, and roll data via the NMEA 2000® network.
Performance and Connectivity
The NAC-3 is rated for continuous loads of 30 amps and peak loads of 50 amps for 1 second for reversible helm motor control. The clutch output supports a maximum of 3 amps, and the solenoid control operates at 12/24V DC with a load range from 10mA to 10A. The system is powered by 12/24V DC and operates within a temperature range of -25°C to +55°C. It features IPX5 water protection and complies with EN60945 standards for shock and vibration. Connectivity includes a Micro-C NMEA 2000® port (1 LEN) and an NMEA 0183® IN/OUT port with baud rates of 4.8, 9.6, 19.2, and 38.4 kbaud. The system integrates Simrad Continuum steering technology, auto-tuning, and automatic compass calibration for simplified setup and improved heading accuracy. Control can be performed via dedicated units such as the AP44, IS42 displays, OP12 keypads, networked multifunction displays, or the Simrad WR10 wireless remote.
