Radars: Should you ditch your old "microwave" to switch to Doppler?

Marine radar is undergoing the same shift as TVs in 2010: the magnetron — robust but power-hungry, slow to warm up, blind at close range — is being replaced by Solid State and Doppler. A dozen watts instead of a few kilowatts, instant start, detection at six meters instead of fifty, and a color that immediately tells you if a target is approaching.
