Autopilots: Stay on course with confidence

An autopilot is essential equipment for any sailor, whether for coastal cruising, offshore passages, or regattas. At Skysat, drawing on our experience in offshore racing, we know that a reliable and high-performing autopilot guarantees safety and comfort on board. Discover our selection of autopilots and components, rigorously chosen for their robustness and precision.

Choosing the right pilot for your boat

Choosing an autopilot depends on the size and type of your boat, as well as your sailing plans. Different types of autopilots are available, each suited to specific uses. We'll guide you through the main options.

  • Hydraulic inboard autopilots: Ideal for large sailboats and motorboats. They offer high power and precision, with robust hydraulic cylinders. Example: Raymarine Evolution autopilots with hydraulic pumps.
  • Outboard autopilots: Designed for motorboats equipped with outboard steering. Simple installation and compact size. Example: Garmin Reactor 40 outboard autopilots.
  • rudder stock autopilots: Suitable for small to medium-sized sailboats. They mount directly onto the rudder stock. Example: Raymarine EV-100 Sail autopilots.
  • Autopilot computers: The brain of the system, integrating sensors and control algorithms. Compatible with various interfaces (NMEA 2000, SeaTalk NG). Example: the B&G H5000 autopilot computer.

The importance of sensors and interfaces

The performance of an autopilot also depends on the quality of its sensors and its integration into the onboard network. Accurate heading sensors and reliable feedback are crucial for optimal piloting. Good NMEA 2000 integration allows the autopilot's full potential to be exploited.

  • Heading sensors: Gyrocompass, fluxgate compass, or inertial measurement unit. The choice depends on the required accuracy and budget. Example: the Simrad Precision-9 heading sensor.
  • Rudder angle sensors: Provide precise information on rudder position, essential for responsive steering.
  • NMEA 2000 and SeaTalk NG interfaces: Allow integration of the autopilot with other navigation instruments (GPS, wind vane-anemometer, etc.) and exploitation of wind, current, etc. data.
  • Power units: These provide power and control to the hydraulic cylinder. Choose a unit appropriate for the size of the boat and the power of the cylinder.

Installation and configuration: key points

Proper installation is essential to ensure the reliability and performance of your autopilot. Calibrating the sensors and configuring the piloting parameters are crucial steps. Don't hesitate to call a professional if you're unsure.

  • Compass calibration: Essential to compensate for magnetic deviation errors.
  • Configuring steering parameters: Gain, counter-rudder, etc. Adjust these parameters according to sea conditions and boat behavior.
  • Connection check: Ensure that all electrical and mechanical connections are properly made.
  • Sea trials: Conduct sea trials to verify the proper functioning of the autopilot and adjust the parameters if necessary.

💡 Skysat's advice

Before installation, check the compatibility of your autopilot with your existing navigation system. A software update for the autopilot may be necessary for optimal integration and to avoid data conflicts.
