Collection: Madintec

Skysat met Matthieu Robert and David Césari at the very beginning of Madintec, following the work carried out in the America's Cup with Bravo Systems. Together, Bravo, Madintec, and Skysat developed the first autopilots for foiling IMOCA boats in 2014, when conventional piloting systems were no longer sufficient. Skysat then handled the distribution of Madintec and Bravo products in France. A long-standing installer of Madintec piloting systems for offshore racing foiling boats, Skysat now carries out custom integrations, from configuration to sea trials.

Madintec : Electronic piloting system for foiling boats

Madintec (Mad in Tec) is a French company, born from the America's Cup, specializing in electronic steering systems for offshore racing foiling boats (IMOCA, Ultim, prototypes). Its systems calculate optimized steering laws in real time for high-performance sailboats by integrating wind sensors, inertial measurement units, and foil sensors. Skysat supports offshore racing teams in the electronic architecture, steering system integration, and fine-tuning of their systems.

Madintec control unit

At the heart of the boat's electronic architecture, the Madintec steering system collects and merges data from wind sensors, inertial measurement units, log/speed, rudder angle, and foil sensors to provide a precise real-time model of the boat's behavior. Steering laws are continuously calculated to control the stability, trim, and trajectories of IMOCA, Ultim, and offshore racing prototype foilers.

Exail inertial navigation systems and high-precision wind calculations from Bravo Systems are integrated into this architecture to provide the control unit with reliable data, even in very challenging sea conditions. Madintec focuses its expertise on high-performance offshore racing foiling boats, where the quality of the control unit is crucial for performance and safety.

Wireless wind vanes and anemometers

Madintec wind sensors transmit real-time data to displays and applications without requiring wiring, simplifying installation and reducing implementation costs.

  • Long-range wireless technology: Reliable radio transmission up to several tens of meters, eliminating the need for masthead cabling. Robust communication protocol resistant to interference.
  • Extended autonomy: Powered by a rechargeable battery or integrated solar cell for several months of maintenance-free operation. Charge level indicator accessible via the app.
  • Automatic calibration: Simplified calibration procedure to ensure accurate wind direction and speed measurements. Automatic correction of alignment and magnetic offset.

Displays and tactical systems

Madintec displays combine high-frequency GPS and tactical display to provide racers with essential real-time information: speed, heading, VMG, laylines and wind data.

  • 10 Hz GPS: High refresh rate for accurate tracking of instantaneous speed and acceleration. Ideal for optimizing upwind sailing and coastal racing.
  • Tactical display: Visualization of laylines (limit routes for tacking), VMG (speed made good), and optimal wind angles. Clear and readable graphical interface in all lighting conditions.
  • Multi-source connectivity: Simultaneous reception of data from wireless wind vane, internal GPS, and external NMEA sensors. Information merging for a complete and consistent display.

Smartphone and tablet apps

Madintec offers iOS and Android applications to transform your smartphone or tablet into a tactical dashboard instrument, receiving data from wireless sensors and offering advanced analysis and replay features.

  • Mad Lab application : An open platform for viewing and recording wind, GPS, and heading data. Customizable interface with widgets configurable according to crew preferences.
  • Recording and replay: Saving navigation sessions for later analysis. Replaying tracks with synchronized wind and speed data for debriefing and optimization.
  • Data sharing: Export data in standard formats (CSV, GPX) for integration into routing or performance analysis software. Cloud synchronization for multi-device access.

💡 Skysat's advice

Madintec wireless solutions offer great installation flexibility and are ideal for mid-sized sailboats and multihulls where masthead wiring is complex or expensive. Ensure receivers are positioned away from metal structures to guarantee optimal radio range. For regattas, test the complete setup before the race to validate connectivity and measurement accuracy. Skysat can assist you in selecting sensors and integrating them with your existing instruments.
