The B&G ST850-P17 sensor is an analog through-hull transducer that accurately measures boat speed and water temperature. Manufactured by Airmar, this sensor is a benchmark for B&G and Simrad instrument systems requiring analog inputs. It combines two essential functions in a single unit, simplifying installation and wiring for reliable performance.
Technical specifications
The ST850-P17 uses a paddlewheel to measure speeds from 2 to 45 knots. The temperature sensor offers an operating range of -10°C to 40°C with an accuracy of ±0.5°C. Its low-profile P17 plastic through-hull fitting protrudes only 5 mm below the hull to minimize drag. It is designed for a 51 mm diameter hole. A self-sealing valve is integrated into the through-hull fitting, reducing water ingress when the insert is removed for cleaning. Power requirements are 5 VDC to 25 VDC.
Positioning and compatibility
As an analog sensor, the ST850-P17 is designed for use with B&G instruments and processors that have dedicated analog inputs. It differs from newer models like the B&G DST810 (also manufactured by Airmar), which transmits speed, temperature, and depth data digitally over an NMEA 2000 network. The choice of an analog signal makes it ideal for replacing an existing sensor on a non-NMEA 2000 installation or for direct connection to displays such as those in the B&G Triton² range. The P17 plastic housing is suitable for fiberglass or metal hulls; for wooden hulls, equivalent versions with bronze through-hull fittings are available.
