Detailed description
Detailed description
The BLU marine IC-M700PRO from Icom is an SSB radiotelephone designed for long-distance communication at sea. It combines a simplified interface with robust transmission power, making it suitable for both experienced users and SSB beginners. This model is positioned as reliable equipment for voice and data communications (RTTY, email via external modem) on HF frequencies.
Performance and Long-Distance Communication
The IC-M700PRO features a powerful 150 W (PEP) transmitter on the 1.6 to 23.999 MHz bands, switchable to 60 W or 20 W. Above 24 MHz (up to 27.500 MHz), the power is 60 W (PEP), switchable to 20 W. This capability ensures extended and reliable communication range. To maintain optimal performance, even during demanding operations such as RTTY or email, an integrated cooling fan and an aluminum chassis ensure efficient heat dissipation. The reception coverage extends from 500 kHz to 29.9999 MHz, with a typical sensitivity of 0.35 μV (J3E, R3E, J2B, A1A at 12 dB SINAD) for the 1.8 to 29.9999 MHz bands.
Ergonomics and Integrated Functions
The IC-M700PRO's operability is optimized by direct controls: large independent GROUP and CHANNEL buttons facilitate quick channel selection. Each front-panel button serves a unique function. The green LCD screen is clear and easy to read in bright sunlight, and is also suitable for night operations thanks to non-glare lighting. The radiotelephone supports multiple operation modes: J3E (USB), LSB, H3E (AM), J2B (AFSK), F1B (FSK), R3E, and A1A (CW). It has 150 memory channels (divided into 3 groups of 50) and a fast-scan function. The NMEA0183 interface and two DIN connectors (8-pin and 7-pin) allow connection of external equipment such as a linear amplifier, FSK terminal, or email modem.
Detailed Technical Specifications
The IC-M700PRO operates on a 13.6 V DC power supply (±15%). Current consumption is 2.5 A in receive mode (max. audio) and 30 A in transmit mode (max. power). Frequency stability is ±10 Hz below 15 MHz and ±20 Hz above. The operating temperature range is -30°C to +60°C. Dimensions (excluding projections) are 291.4 × 116.4 × 315 mm, with a weight of approximately 7.8 kg. It is equipped with an SO-239 antenna connector (50 Ω), an 8-pin microphone connector (600 Ω), and an external speaker jack (4 W at 10% distortion under 4 Ω). Supplied accessories include a hand microphone, mounting kit, spare fuses, DC power cable, microphone bracket, and ACC plugs. An optional AT-140 automatic antenna coupler is available to optimize tuning with long wire antennas.
Market Positioning
Icom's IC-M700PRO is positioned as a robust, dedicated marine SSB radiotelephone focused on reliability and ease of use for long-distance communications. Unlike more integrated marine systems, which may offer secondary SSB functions via complex interfaces, the IC-M700PRO stands out with its direct physical controls and dedicated screen, enabling quick mastery. Compared to other Icom models such as the IC-M802, which often features more advanced DSP and a remote control head, the IC-M700PRO prioritizes a single-unit design and traditional interface, which may be preferred for its robustness and installation simplicity. Its 150 W (PEP) power output compares favorably with competitors offering lower power, ensuring better range and greater reliability for essential SSB links.
