ICOM Excellence: Reliable Maritime Communication
ICOM, a Japanese manufacturer established in 1954, has become a global leader in professional maritime communications. Specializing in marine VHF radios, AIS systems, and distress beacons, ICOM equips commercial vessels as well as offshore racing and cruising sailboats. The brand is renowned for its exceptional reliability, compliance with stringent international standards (SOLAS, DSC, GMDSS), and ease of use in the most challenging maritime conditions. Skysat understands the vital importance of reliable communication at sea, and we offer our expertise to integrate ICOM solutions into robust and redundant communication systems.
Fixed and Portable Marine VHF Radios
ICOM VHF radios form the backbone of maritime communication, providing a reliable link for distress communications, port coordination, and ship-to-ship communication. ICOM systems incorporate the latest Digital Selective Calling (DSC) technology and comply with international maritime regulations.
- IC- M510 / M605 Series (Fixed Black): Fixed VHF radios integrating DSC Class D, integrated AIS receiver, NMEA 2000/0183 compatibility. High-definition color display, powerful speaker, ActiveNoise Cancelling function for optimal audio clarity in noisy environments.
- IC- M330G / M423G Series (Fixed with GPS): Fixed VHF radios with integrated GPS, automatic MOB (Man Overboard) function, and voice recorder for communication traceability. Ideal for coastal and offshore navigation.
- IC- M94D /M73 Series (Handheld with DSC): y.com/products/icom-vhf-portable-ic-m94de"> M94D /M73 (Handheld with DSC): Compact handheld VHF radios with integrated DSC and GPS, IPX7/IPX8 (fully waterproof), buoyancy, long battery life. AquaQuake function for automatic water drainage from the speaker.
- IC- M37E /M25 Series (Basic Handhelds): Compact and lightweight handheld VHF radios, ideal for tenders and coastal applications. Simple to use, proven robustness.
AIS (Automatic Identification System)
ICOM AIS transponders and receivers significantly improve maritime safety by displaying the position, heading, and speed of other equipped vessels. AIS integration with chartplotters and radars provides optimal situational awareness, which is particularly valuable in areas of heavy traffic or reduced visibility conditions.
- MA-510TR (Class B AIS Transponder) : SOLAS compliant Class B AIS transponder, simultaneous transmission and reception, NMEA 2000/0183 compatible. Simple installation, low power consumption.
- Integrated AIS Receivers: Many ICOM fixed VHF radios incorporate an AIS receiver, allowing for simplified installation and a reduction in the number of devices on board.
EPIRB Distress Beacons
ICOM EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) are critical safety devices capable of automatically transmitting a geolocated distress signal in the event of a shipwreck or major emergency. Compliant with COSPAS-SARSAT standards, they guarantee rapid and accurate location by international rescue services.
- GM1600E Series (EPIRB GPS): Category 1 EPIRB beacon (automatic release) with integrated GPS for precise location. Long battery life, waterproof and robust housing, GMDSS and SOLAS compliant.
System Integration and Compatibility
ICOM equipment integrates seamlessly into modern navigation systems thanks to its NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 compatibility. This interoperability allows GPS, AIS, and weather data to be shared between all onboard instruments, creating a coherent and efficient navigation ecosystem.
- NMEA 2000 compatibility: Plug-and-play integration with modern navigation networks (Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno, B&G, Simrad chartplotters).
- NMEA 0183 compatibility: Connection with older navigation systems and dedicated instruments.
- CommandMic function: Some ICOM VHF radios allow the use of a remote microphone for the cockpit, improving ergonomics and safety.
💡 Skysat's advice
For optimal safety during offshore navigation, Skysat recommends installing at least one fixed VHF radio with DSC, GPS, and integrated AIS receiver, supplemented by a portable VHF radio with DSC as a backup. Be sure to register your MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) and correctly program the DSC functions to fully benefit from automatic alerting capabilities. NMEA 2000 network integration significantly simplifies installation and improves the overall reliability of the communication system.
