Detailed description
Detailed description
The Icom GM600 12V GMDSS Fixed VHF Pack is a marine communication solution designed specifically to meet the requirements of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) for sea areas A1 and A2. This fixed VHF transceiver integrates advanced features and proven robustness, essential for safety at sea. Its compatibility with a 12V DC power supply (10.8–15.6 V) makes it particularly suitable for vessels whose main electrical system is 12 volts, offering installation flexibility compared to standard GMDSS equipment, which is often 24V.
Technical Performance and GMDSS Compliance
The Icom GM600 VHF operates on transmission frequencies from 156.025 to 161.600 MHz and reception frequencies from 156.025 to 162.000 MHz, with channel 70 dedicated to Digital Selective Calling (DSC) at 156.525 MHz. It delivers selectable RF power of 25 W or 1 W, ensuring optimal communication range or low-power operation to save energy. The 10 W audio power on an external speaker (4 Ω) and 2 W on the internal speaker ensures clear sound even in noisy environments. This model is certified MED, SOLAS, GMDSS, and complies with ITU-R M.493-13 for DSC, as well as other international standards such as IMO A.694 (17) and IEC61097-12, attesting to its reliability for emergency and routine communications.
Integration and Marine Durability
The GM600 GMDSS Fixed VHF is designed for seamless integration with existing navigation systems thanks to its IEC 61162-1 (NMEA 0183) connectivity. It accepts RMC, GGA, GNS, GLL, and VTG input data and outputs DSC and DSE messages, enabling essential linking with an external GPS receiver for distress functions. The front panel is rated IPX7, ensuring protection against temporary immersion up to 1 meter, a major advantage in the marine environment. Its compact dimensions (274 × 114 × 121.5 mm) and weight of 1.6 kg facilitate installation. Compared to the Icom GM800, which is a powerful 150 W PEP MF/HF transceiver for long-distance communications and areas A3/A4, the GM600 is positioned as the dedicated fixed VHF solution for coastal and nearby offshore areas (A1/A2), where a VHF is the primary means of communication. It ideally complements a GMDSS portable VHF like the Icom IC-GM1600E, which provides a low-power backup communication solution (2 W/1 W) and 1-meter waterproofing, essential for liferafts or ship abandonment situations. The pack includes the HM-214V hand microphone, a DC power cable, and a mounting bracket kit, ensuring quick commissioning.
