Detailed description
Detailed description
The Icom BLU marine IC-M710 is an MF/HF transceiver designed for reliable global maritime communications. It provides a robust solution for long-distance communication needs at sea, with a design focused on durability and performance in demanding environments.
Communication Capabilities and Performance
The BLU marine IC-M710 features 1136 channels, including 160 programmable channels, 242 duplex ITU SSB, 72 simplex ITU SSB, and 662 duplex ITU FSK. It covers reception from 500 kHz to 29.9999 MHz and transmission on allocated bands between 1.6 and 27.5 MHz. Output power is 150 W PEP for frequencies from 1.6 to 23.999 MHz, and 60 W PEP for 24.0 to 27.500 MHz, with selectable levels of 60 W and 20 W. This high power, combined with a large cooling fan and die-cast aluminum chassis, allows continuous transmission even in demanding modes such as RTTY and NBDP. Supported modes are J3E (USB, LSB), H3E (AM), J2B (AFSK), F1B (FSK), R3E, and A1A (CW). Frequency stability is ±10 Hz below 15 MHz and ±20 Hz above 15 MHz.
Robust Design and Ergonomics
Built with a die-cast aluminum chassis and surface-mounted components, the BLU marine IC-M710 is designed to withstand harsh marine conditions. Its alphanumeric display provides clear status information and allows programming of up to seven characters per memory channel for easy identification. Operation is simplified by two large knobs for memory and frequency control. It includes RF gain control and an audio-activated squelch. Terminals are available for frequency and mode control via an NMEA interface, and direct channel selection is possible via a keypad. A large front-mounted speaker is included, and the unit is compatible with weather fax. Operating temperature range is -30°C to +60°C, with performance guaranteed between -20°C and +60°C.
Market Positioning and Options
While newer MF/HF transceivers like the Icom IC-M804 integrate full GMDSS features with DSC Class A, the BLU marine IC-M710 positions itself as a powerful and reliable SSB communication solution focused on voice and data transmission performance without the complexity of integrated DSC. It represents a robust and potentially more economical choice for vessels not requiring mandatory GMDSS compliance or as a secondary communication system. Competitors such as Furuno with the FS-1575 also offer high-performance MF/HF systems, often with more advanced GMDSS integrations. The IC-M710 stands out for its ease of use and ability to support continuous operation at full power. The unit operates on 13.6 V DC ±15%, drawing 2.5 A in receive mode (max audio) and 30 A in transmit mode (max power). Dimensions are 291.4 × 116.4 × 315 mm, and weight is approximately 7.8 kg. For quick and easy antenna tuning, an automatic tuning function is available when used with the AT-140 or AT-130 option. Included accessories are a hand microphone, mounting bracket kit, spare fuses, DC power cable, microphone bracket, and ACC/speaker plugs.
